O.Chat > Project Runway: Season 6
This is a great idea, Christina. I love Project Runway too. I am going to have to be mindful of checking this thread because I have a tendency not to catch shows on their first airing. I will try to break that habit so I can come on here and dish.
I was happily surprised to find the "All Stars" airing when I tuned in tonight... I have always thought Korto did some of the best designs of any season. And now I get to see even more of her work!
I felt the right person went home. The outfit was not well made and that is what bothered me the most about the dress. I did not get to see the show from the beginning, so I TIVO'd to see the part of the show that I missed.
I loved the grey gown, even thought the judges thought it was "safe"...thought it was the prettiest outfit. Also loved the red dress.
I had to TiVo the all-star show and I won't get a chance to watch until this weekend sometime, unfortunately. I think the right designer went home, but an evil part of me would have liked to have seen what kind of train wreck she would have come up with for another challenge.
It's hard for me to keep track of these designers in the early weeks. Too many of them. But how much do I love Tim Gunn? I don't even have words for it. I missed you so much Tim!
I really thought the see-thru dress was going to go home. He is very lucky that the judges didn't get that girl's design.Surprisingly, Lindsay critiqued very well.
I was surprised they sent her home, too. I think the guy with the see-through clothes had better fashion sense and his potential workmanship/vision still came through, but usually the person who "makes better television" is retained on these reality shows, just to get people talking about their outrageous behavior, designs, etc.
It's too bad they can't do the first three challenges with no one sent home, then send 3 home at the first elimination. Then we'd at least get to see a bit more about their ability to design great clothes. The weakest three after three challenges would be dropped.
But then, I don't write television reality shows...
@chicagoan:
What I like about PR is that generally--certainly not always!--you have to actually show some skill to be retained. You're not kept around just for your personality. There are some exceptions, like Santino and Vincent (who put a basket on a model's head and called it a hat) but mostly, good designers stick around. Though your idea would certainly lead to some fun viewing!
@Nyon:
I thought the same thing about LiLo!! Who knew that she could stay sober long enough to put together a coherent critique, bless her heart. She had many decent and on-point things to add.
I was also impressed with LiLo!
Now I have to check out what the Rungay Men have to say about last night's show.....later!
I'm glad this thread got started. This is the perfect venue for it!
I just watched the first episode this morning (I TIVO so I can zip thru commercials while I sip my morning coffee). The dress I wanted to see more of was Epperson's. I thought it was fabulous, and very red carpet worthy. He's the designer who interests me most so far . I like that he came out of window design. And he's older.
But who knows - there's a long long way to go here!
I hope everyone has watched because I am about to give it away.
I am glad that they kicked Mitchell off. How did he even make it on the show? His spot could have been used for another designer that really wanted to be there and that would have worked harder. I was tripping off of Epperson and Christal (I thinks that her name).LOL!!
Nyon,
Do you read Tom and Lorenzo's blog? It's a hoot.
Mitchell had to go. His craftsmanship was really lacking. I loved last week's maternity challenge as well, and thought that the red dress with the waistline puckers and coat was a great ensemble. I also like the kitten party dress.
Nope, but I heard of it. Its projectrungay.com right? I liked that red dress and coat from last week as well.
Here you go, Nyon.
Thanks Chicagoan.
I think it is tooooo funny that they call him Bitchell. LMAO!!!!
I have to agree with Tom and Lorenzo -- I'm sorry about Ra'mon being stuck with a lousy partner and having to do everything, but no way was that neoprene dress a "winning" look. I kept looking at it and thinking that I must have been going blind because I had no idea what the judges were seeing in it. The drape of the skirt and how it looked like it pulled down to one side to me was insane.
Qristyl and Epperson just got on my nerves. Maybe it was because of the editing, but I couldn't ever understand what they were arguing ABOUT. They just seemed to be sniping at each other but for no real purpose.
I liked Christopher and Logan's looks the best, as seen here (scroll down.) The two looks appeared to relate to each other, even though the color choices were poor for beachwear (gray and black? At least there was that pop of gold.)
I agree with you Christina. Qristyl and Epperson only needed to open their mouths and they were off and running. They have a real dislike for each other and we are sure to see them come to blows again. The producers will take that strife to the bank.
Are you watching Models of the Runway? It's not really a show per se - more like a tag on of the main show. However, Fatma is supposedly hot for Logan. I think there's a real soap opera quality to that show.
The Christopher and Logan gown was very beautiful with great draping detail.
I completely agree that Epperson and Qristyl were destined to be a disaster. That said, I still think Epperson is very talented. His red carpet gown was spectacular (IMHO) and I also liked the preggers outfit. If you look at it on the website, where the video is paused so you can see it and he's talking about the 2 pieces, it is quite lovely. Definitely something I could have seen Romjin wearing. Epperson has a different perspective than the other designers because he's (a) older and (b) a window dresser by trade. The flash that profession requires is in his clothes. I think there are some other very talented people on this season, but he's the one who interests me most right now.
I thought the green and white print piece for the beachwear was wonderful. It had some great workmanship - the top fit to perfection - and absolutely belonged on the beach. It looked a little "bubbly" in the rear when the model was walking away, but I didn't mind it. I really had the sense - mostly from seeing his other pieces - that Epperson was the driving force behind it - not his partner.
To be honest, Qristyl has driven me crazy since the first night with that hideous purple mess that had the floral ruffle down the front. She has a thing for shiny fabric that she seems to equate with her "sexilicious for the big woman" (or whatever she called it in episode one) philosophy. When she showed up on the runway for the beachwear in that blue satin number I just wanted her gone gone gone. She was badly overmatched working with Epperson - and their design sensibilities could not be more different - but I think she would have clashed with anyone else as well. She sounded insecure and indecisive from their first chat, and that was manifested in an overbearing, whiny attitude. I watched the first scene of them on the beach again this morning. When she said she wanted something to be worn "in the water" and he said "out of the water", she immediately said "okay." That was the moment for her to be a team leader and she blew it. Sorry, but I don't see her talent yet - but stranger things have happened.
It didn't surprise me that Mitchell went home. But I felt kind of sorry for him by the end. He seemed so incapable of doing anything on any episode that I began to wonder if he had a condition like ADD. Did anyone else think that?
Finally, I just loved the crazy tulle gown that Logan's team did. It didn't have much to do with the beach in an obvious way, though I could certainly see some celebrity getting married on a beach wearing it. My husband, who loves this show as much as I do, also loved it.
Mitchell seemed like a sweet kid who was completely overmatched by the demands of the competition. Editing is always a tricky thing, but I don't think we saw him doing any work on those two designs other than ironing something. Oh, wait, I guess we did see him at a sewing machine or something.
I know time was tight, and again, editing...but I think Q and Epperson would have been well served to have just sat down for 15-20 minutes and hashed out whatever it was that was making them both so mad. It's hard, sometimes, to explain yourself to a partner in a way that doesn't make the other person feel attacked and belittled. Neither of them seemed to be very good at it.
Q's taste level is also something I question. It's only the third episode, though, so maybe things will change. I forgot the name of the designer who sent his model out in that stripper gear, though. With the garters and all? That was atrocious.
Christopher and Logan's gown was the only thing I could look at and say it was "avant-garde," because of the exaggerated ballgown shape. I just didn't see avant-garde in that neoprene dress, and when Rachel Bilson said she could imagine herself wearing it? I just had to roll my eyes.
I think they made Ra'mon the winning designer just so they could have the drama!!!!! of getting rid of Mitchell -- the first designer who was actually on a winning team to be kicked off. At least Ra'mon had the grace, I think, to realize that this was a very surprising outcome.
This is off the subject of Runway, but I am enjoying Mad Men because the outfits are so early 60's. The show also is a reflection of the times and its issues. I like to read Tom and Lorenzo's weekly MM commentary.
Back to Runway, Mitchell simply had to go. Of course, Santino could barely sew and he made it to the top.
I do hope Michael Kors shows up soon - nothing beats the looks that La Nina and Michael exchange when they are faced with a real design atrocity!
I think that brown dress with the high collar was kinda avant garde.
Christina, I am questioning Q's taste as well. Last week when she wore that cow printed jean skirt and jacket, I was like OMG. I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I kinda think she makes those clothes that you can buy at the Chinese store. Do you know what I mean?
Yeah, the green dress was not the best. I was puzzled by that decision. Like you said they wanted some drama.
Has anyone watched last night's episode yet? It was a good one. Nyon, I totally know what you mean about the clothes Q makes, although last night her dress was just boring. Aside from that, I agree that her overall taste is a bit off, and my grandmother always said that "good taste cannot be taught." I think she was right in this case. How can you be surrounded by so much inspiration and produce the things she does? Designing must be harder than I think!
Didn't care for Epperson's dress although I do appreciate the skill that went into it.
Would've liked Ra'mon's dress if that shoulder embellishment were a bit smaller.
Would've liked that green dress if the black stripe at the bottom didn't intersect her bottom. Can't imagine how unflattering that would be on me!
Didn't like Althea's "suit" either.
I like Irina's design because I'm having a moment right now with belted jackets - inspired by Mrs. O?
I also liked Louise's black, ruffled collar design.
Still having a hard time remembering other contestants. The right person went home, imo, but I won't name names yet just in case some of you haven't watched it yet!
I knew it was over for the designer that went home because the designer was getting to much face time. The dress was definitely boring.
I actually liked Althea suit. I thought it was cute, hip, and sexy. I hated that green dress. I didn't like the top of it and I hated the black straps. The other designs were straight. I was tripping over the dude in the all red suit with that blonde hair. He just looked like a character to me.
Because I am a rabid fan of Tom and Lorenzo it is impossible to validate these thoughts as mine alone, but I did feel queasy when Tim told Q that he did not like the direction she was taking with the chocolate number she was putting together. I actually liked it, and was sorry that she completely caved in. And I don't think that her outfit was the worst of the week.
I just hope that Michael Kors and Nina come back on the show as a twosome soon. For me, their presence is a huge part of the show.
I did like Althea's 3 piece, but thought the skirt was much too short.
Nyon,
"I was tripping over the dude . . . " Youth is SO refreshing!!! I love it! You always make my day.

It starts tomorrow on Lifetime, and I couldn't be more thrilled!
Here's some threads to whet your appetite:

I'd love to create a space to talk over episodes as they air. I think, for safety's sake, people should just assume that anything in this thread could be a potential spoiler, and not to visit unless you keep that in mind. It wouldn't be fair to ask east coast viewers not to post until it airs on the west coast, or something like that.
But if somehow you were to find out a result before that episode airs, then maybe you can hold back that kind of spoiler, out of kindness.
Anyway, I was very worried about the move both to Lifetime and to Los Angeles. I also was a little dismayed about some of the guest judges I know they're going to have. But everything I've read and heard so far suggests that the show hasn't changed much and that this will be a good season. Whee! So excited.
