O.Chat > The Lounge: Drop in and chat awhile!
K, I will be the first to post in the new lounge.
Me sick. Why do people act like babies when they are sick? Well I do, probably because I don't have any babies. I'm sure you mommies go about your day like nothing is wrong. I am feeling much better today. Last night was terrible. We shall see how tonight goes because for some reason at night is when things get bad. Ok, while I'm typing, I just blew my nose and had a massive nose bleed. UGH!!
Ok now if I can remember what everyone said on the other thread.
Ann, Housewives of ATL is too entertaining. You definitely can get addicted because you want to see what's the next crazy thing they're going to do or say. Those episodes you saw are from a few weeks back.
Sorry ladies, but it is not junk tv to me. I'm sure compared to the things you watch it probably is junk, but for me it is pure entertainment. I take that back, maybe it is junk because I am a reality tv junkie ;-P
MsG, See, that's why I could picture you ladies out there saying the same things ;-)
Kristen, I hope your baby is ok.
I had a long flight this weekend for work, and the flight had satellite tv. Anyway, I got stuck on watching the Housewives of Atlanta..I just couldn't turn it off, and they kept playing episode after episode, until they got to the most recent one. Now I fear I'm addicted. I admit that I have watched a few of the other installments (like Orange County) of the series, but I hadn't seen this current crop of ladies.
I will also admit that I watched 2 episodes of the VH1 dating show with these 2 horribly ghetto fab brothers, Chance and Real, looking for love from a group of ghetto fab (and not so fab) women. I didn't enjoy it like I enjoyed the Housewives, but it was still entertaining for a boring flight that I couldn't seem to sleep through.
I'm not sure what y'all were talking about on the other thread, but Nyon's comment made me think of the guilty pleasure I had last weekend on that plane watching that nonsense.
My shows are in no particular order:
Project Runway
True Blood
MadMen
Entourage
Weeds
The Tudors
The Brotherhood
Nurse Jackie
Big Love
Curb Your Enthusiasm
BBC shows that show up on PBS or BBCA
Masterpiece Theatre
Biggest Loser
Damages
A number of shows on the Food Channel, when I am at the gym, in the cardio room, during cold and bad weather. That's sick, ironic, and noted by all the other gym rats who work out.
And I am sure I have forgotten a few. I will tune into the reality shows at the end of their seasons; e,g. America's Next Top Model, American Idol, Top Chef, DWTS.
I live in Vermont. I am inside a great deal - at least 6 months a year. I need to have my premium channels. I need to have my TV. I do have a life, I swear.
I love many of the shows on your list...Entourage, Big Love, Weeds, Curb...those are my faves! This season of Weeds was really good. I think her new husband is crazy, but they have quite the on-screen chemistry, huh?
We do not have enough room for my shows. LOL!!
Yeah, they do rock the boat. But, I think Nancy will rethink the relationship, obviously, after he turns coat on her (refer to finale) to save his own political aspirations. And, she'll go to jail in Mexico.
Hi everyone,
I'm just dropping in on the fly to let you know I'm still among the living! ;-) I hope you all are doing well. I haven't read anything here since my last long post. I hit a wall of exhaustion and had to rest. Then, after a summer of staying inside to avoid the hottest summer on record, I had to make all sorts of doctor's appointments for every kind of annual check-in, plus get caught up on errands like oil changes, etc.
On the up side, the cooler temperatures have allowed me to spend some restful, restorative, blissful time in my country garden. This is absolutely my favorite pass-time in the whole wide world! How I love my garden, and this location "in the country in the middle of the city."
Getting the house and garden ready for the rainy season is a bit of a chore. (My nerdy Sweet Prince is brilliant in the abstract world, but wouldn't notice a problem in the physical world until there was a total flood, or the roof fell in on top of him.) ;-) So I take care our physical plant. Luckily, I have a wonderful guy who has helped me with it for years, who has become a very dear friend.
These next few weeks between the heat and the rain will continue to be busy, so I won't be here much. When life settles down, I intend to go back and read everything written on this thread since I left it, and to get back into the conversation.
I hope everyone has a happy, healthy fall. I did read just a few posts up above, and I see that you've been sick, Nyon. I hope you're on the mend.
Good thoughts to all of you. I've missed your intelligent, cheerful, loving, caring selves, and look forward to rejoining the group in a couple weeks.
Take care, all.
BarbG,
You and Operafanatic were reading my mind about the need for an actual "lounge" thread. My further thought is that maybe we can keep it light on this one. That is up to everyone, of course, but we have some serious and intense discussions in the other places. So, at least for myself I will try not to raise any serious issues.
Nyon,
you may be idealizing some of us (me) more than we (I) deserve in picturing such stoic and mature behavior. I am known to behave like a baby when ill and I am not ashamed of it. Being taken care of, offered my favorite foods, reading and ordering pay per view movies is the only positive side of feeling under the weather and I never fail to take advantage of that opportunity. I hope you feel better soon, but right now treat yourself to something that you like if you can.
IVA and Bevi,
I like a number of the shows you list but my husband and I became news junkies during the election season and have not really tuned back in to entertainment TV as much as perhaps we should. We would probably lessen our stress levels. But I do watch Project Runway each week and sometimes get caught up on some others during the weekend when there is less news coverage. I will try to follow your example and take a little break from MSNBC.
Note #1 to self: Watch Atlanta Housewives
Note #2 to self: Investigate fencing lessons in futile hope that arms will resemble those of MO
Note to all of you: add Hung to the list of TV shows to which we've become addicted. It's on HBO. Racy, crazy premise - but if you've survived Samantha on SATC and Weeds, you'll be fine.
Chicagoan - I just posted what will probably be the last message in the Personal Messages room. I'll be in touch!
I have seriously got to start dinner, but I wanted to wish our Nyon a better, healthier day tomorrow. I suggest cinnamon toast and tea with honey for a speedy recovery. Maybe others have better ideas! Oh - can't wait until Posh wakes up and reads this one. What, oh what, will she suggest?
And, Willow - welcome back. Enjoy the cool breezes and check in when you can.
Whiskey in the tea, perhaps? :) A "hot toddy" always does the trick for me!
OpFan, I unfortnately posted in the Peronal Messages section one last time. Didn't see this in time!
Nothing broken and no stitches for my son - hooray! He jumped off the top of the jungle gym, landed on his knee, and has a big, ugly gash there. Of course, today he jumped right out of the van and ran into school so the incident is already forgotten. Kids are so resilient!
Nyon, I hope you feel better soon. Being sick is no fun. Big Baby Alert: when I don't feel well, I go straight to my parents' house. My dad plays with The Twins in the backyard, while I lay my head on my mother's lap and she rubs my hair. Don't feel bad because I think everyone is a baby when sick, and don't even get me started on men:)
My tv shows? I will confess to watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta, NYC and New Jersey, although I hated the OC version. I also watch Project Runway, Top Chef, and The Tudors. I watch Grey's Anatomy in spurts, but it's sort of a love-hate relationship with that one. I also used to watch the Style Channel constantly, but they've added a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with style, like Supernanny. No, thanks....I get more than my fair share of disobedient kids at home!
What's up people,
Thanks for all the well wishes. I am doing much better. I actually can smell and taste again. There is no point in eating if you can't taste. Last night was not bad actually. Probably because I was drunk off the Nyquil, which I must admit I love. Hi my name is Nyon and I am addicted to Nyquil. JK, too funny!! Ok we can really see I am feeling better because I am making jokes and laughing at them myself.
Good to hear from you Willow.
Aurora & Kristen, so I guess it is a universal thing that we turn into babies when sick. But why not? If you can't be a baby when your sick, when can you be?
Kristen, I'm glad to hear about your son. I have always said kids don't cry until their parents or some grown up make ooo's and awww's over their fall or whatever.
I love Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Every thursday me and my BFF call each other during every commercial break to talk about whats going on.
Hi all! It's been a busy couple of days, and I probably won't be checking in again until Sunday afternoon; but I had to take a minute to say "hi."
Nyon, I especially wanted to include my get well wishes and to give you permission to keep being a baby!!! I am a firm believer that when you're sick, you have a right to be babied. After my kids got too old and too independent to snuggle with mama or to let me pamper them on a regular basis, I took full advantage of days when they were sick and welcomed the cuddling, spoiling, etc. My daughter still, at 27, calls me when she's sick since my son-in-law hasn't quite gotten in touch yet with his "nurturing side." LOL! She misses having someone make her a bed on the sofa and bring her soup and all her favorite things.
Kristen, you reminded me of my daughter who also likes to lie with her head in my lap ahd have her hair stroked. And I'm so glad your little guy is fine! I know how scary those incidents are.
Christina, it was good to hear from you on the racial thread. You said you've had lots of things going on in your "real life." I hope they're all good things!!
You're all making me think I need to start watching a little more entertainment TV. What little TV I watch is always the news, with the exception of an occasional What Not to Wear. I was an HGTV junkie for a few years, but it seems they've dropped all of their good design shows, and now all I ever see on the program listing is real estate shows. Probably just as well. When I watched those design shows all the time, I wanted to redecorate my house every other week. :-)
Going over to Fort Lauderdale (a few hours on Alligator Alley) for a couple of days. I'll check back in on Sunday afternoon.
Mmmmmm cinnamon toast sounds yumderful.
I'm not sure that I have a specific recommendation for a cure though, sorry to disappoint!!! I just give in to it, let it take me over and do it's thing, which is quicker that fighting it. I try not to take anything because I'm never sure what that stuff is actually doing to me. Roast chicken is my thing for a restorative dinner. With buttery mashed potato and peas. I MIGHT be persuaded to a hot whisky, lemon and honey, but it has to be mostly lemon and honey because I find whisky deeeesGOSting.
Anyway, Nyon I'm sorry you've been a poorly rabbit, and I was pleased to see that you are on the mend.
I'm REALLY tired today - woke up at 4am this morning and couldn't get back off, read for a while, then fell asleep just as it was getting light. I don't know about you, but that wears me down to the bone.
Anyway, I've been V.busy: knitting like a maniac, walking the dog, sorting out the house, had two reiki sessions yesterday and I've got one this evening (all friends and neighbours), eating a LOT less than usual and generally feeling very "go get 'em!"
I have discovered that booking a table for a craft fair is the motivational equivalent of ExLax. I can't do anything around the house without fretting that I'm not going to have enough stock for my table, so everything gets done at warp speed so I can get back down to constructing more duck feet booties or ballet slipper socks. Today? Red chenille socks with little white hearts on. IMAGINE THE LITTLE CUTE CHUBBY BABY FEET???????? OK. I have to go and knit more.
Love to all!
Yep, feeling fine just in time for the weekend. I will spend tonight in unless something real tempting comes along, then I will have to make it do what it do. Otherwise, I shall wait until tommorrow to hit the streets (that's if it doesn't rain on my parade). Hope everyone has a beautiful weekend!!
Peace
I enjoyed my Friday evening so much, because I spent it with all of you, catching up on the last few pages of news and fun.
Nancy,
Happy Anniversary. I hope you're having a great trip. I look forward to hearing all about it.
Posh,
Happy belated birthday. And Congrats on the Reiki Certificate! What a wonderful healing art to have. I enjoyed some Reiki sessions some years ago. It was so relaxing. From my bit of experience with trying to practice it at an informational workshop, I think it's relaxing and healing for the practitioner as well. It seems like one of those instances where one gets as much or more than one receives. Is that your experience? You remind me that I haven't treated myself to Reiki, Healing Touch, or even just a massage for several years. I've got to do something about that soon!
I'm excited for you to have all the other involvements, too. You have amazing energy and so many talents. I continue to envy the delicious and varied menu at your house. But don't stop telling us about it. It's good vicariously, too.
Opfan,
I love reading about your exciting life filled with wonderful performances. I've a note here about Pink Martini, but I don't know if you mentioned them here or on the music thread. I'll put my comment over there.
Kristen,
I haven't made it to the Welcome thread to welcome you yet, but "Welcome." It's good to have you here. I'm so glad your son wasn't hurt too badly. I've got a new nail polish I'm in love with, too. I guess I'll put that on the thread about skin care, etc.
Nyon,
I'm glad you're ready to go out again. I've been dragging with a minor sort of bug which does little except make me a little achy and a whole lot tired. I seem to be on the mend, but my husband has been flattened by it today. It's amazing to get a pre-flu-season bug!
I hope you're all enjoying a great weekend.
I watched Dancing With the Stars tonight. Tom Delay. That is all I can say. Actually, he did better than I thought he would. It was still odd and too funny. I kinda felt like he was trying a little too hard to break his conservative image, but hey maybe that's how he really gets down in real life.
Willow,
I hope you and your hubby are feeling better!!
I spent a couple of days on the other coast this weekend. I hadn't been over to Fort Lauderdale in a couple of years; and this time it was for meetings, so I didn't get out about town a lot. But Saturday afternoon, I spent a couple of hours on some of their water taxis and saw some pretty amazing things. Our hotel was on one of the intracoastal waterways, near but not on the beach. The water taxis transport people along the intracoastals. They're meant to be a transportation service, not a tour-boat company; but all of the drivers and their assistants give lots of information along the way. I think every celebrity in the world must have a house or a yacht or both in Ft. Lauderdale!!! Some of the houses we saw were the size of small high schools. There were far too many names to remember, but Wendy (Dave Thomas's daughter for whom his hamburger chain was named) has a winter home there. There was also a modest-looking little place, which we were told was quite a gem in its day, that was once owned by Sonny and Cher and where we were told Chastity was born. The most enormous house we saw was owned by the founders of Sunglass Hut. I'm sure there are high schools that are NOT as big as that one! Robert DeNiro's name was mentioned, also Joe and Rose Kennedy. They had a house there while they were waiting for their place on Palm Beach to be built. And way too many others to recall. The only thing more startling than the prices of these houses were the price tags on the yachts we were passing. There is one yacht maker, we were told, whose prices START at 50 million; and you have to pay 25% down and then wait 5 years for the yacht to be built! Someone pointed out Bill Gates's yacht, but it was one of the more "modest"-looking crafts.
Next time, the beach! When I lived in Miami back in the 70s, the Fort Lauderdale beach was always our beach of choice since Miami put all of their hotels right on the beach and Fort L. built theirs on the other side of the street, leaving miles and miles of beautiful, open public beach (and so spring break was born!).
Chicagoan,
I saw this on TV this morning - I'm not surprised - it was inevitable, but it seems rather soon. Did you read the Vanity Fair expose on Palin by Levy Johnson? I think some of these kinds of books and interviews are based on second guessing and biased perceptions.
Nice photo of the First Couple on the cover, though.
BTW - did you see my request for an applesauce recipe from you on the Cooking thread?
Hi, Bevi... no, I didn't. I'll have to head over there and look at that.
I didn't see the VF piece, but sounds like the same thing... I find the whole thing rather disgusting.
The teaser from the book doesn't seem to be any different than what the president wrote about in his own book. This guy has probably written about the information in more tawdry way.
This is the first in a bunch of unauthorized, hearsay ridden profiles on the First Family as individuals and as a family. The price of fame, fortune, and power, I suppose.

Well, we are such a chatty little group that we've already logged 350 comments in our personal messages to each other; and Operafanatic suggested that it might be a good time to create a break and continue in a new thread. Excellent idea. So let's keep talking. And newcomers are welcome, too!
