O.Chat > Fort Hood Memorial

Dear All,

Just in case anyone is wondering ... I don't believe I'm going to post about Mrs. O's appearance at the Fort Hood Memorial. The situation is heartbreaking. I think it's incredibly important to remember those who lost their lives ... I'm just conscious that this is a Michelle Obama fashion blog and worried it's not the right forum. Of course let me know if you disagree - open to different opinions.

Mrs. T,

Thank you for this note, I completely agree with you. I did not think you would post about her today. I have to say that I was so proud of them both and the president could not have given a better speech. As you say, it is a heartbreaking situation and I hope he made the families and the Fort Hood family feel slightly better.

It's certainly not like you're "censoring" the images; anyone who would like to see pictures can certainly find them. So I support your decision, and thank you for your sensitivity.

Completely agree. Very sad day for these families.

Mrs. T,
I guess I am the odd ball out here.
I think that a photo with a headline should be posted.
It wouldn't have to be a photo taken in Texas but one that was taken while they were still in D.C. like this one:
http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/Michelle-Obama/ss/events/pl/050108michelleobama;_ylt=AqMEc21_jPSvGXNEURbArMkKO7gF#photoViewer=/091110/ids_photos_ts/r2733200383.jpg
U.S. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama depart Washington to attend a memorial service at Ft. Hood in Killeen, Texas November 10, 2009.
-------

There was so much bashing all over the internet the past week because President Obama and Michelle didn't rush to Fort Hood the first couple of days, so it is a good idea to show that they did head there for the memorial service.

When Laura Bush went to Rome for the Pope's funeral there was talk about what she wore.
Also, at JFK's funeral Jackie's clothes were reported on.
If Barack Obama is president for eight years then they will be attending many funerals.
Wasn't there an article here on Mrs.O when the Obama's attended the services for Teddy Kennedy? I can't remember.

I see no reason why what Michelle wore from D.C. to Texas can't be reported on.

Anyway that's my opinion.

Edited to add:
http://michelleostyle.blogspot.com/ put up a nice tribute with photos.

I support your decision, Mrs. T. There are plenty of other sites that offer photos of her.

I'm ambivalent about you posting a picture. I can see both sides. Anyway, I thought she looked very nice and classic with the pearls and updo.

Here's Mrs. O at today's Veteran's Day event. I think I remember this jacket from earlier this year. I like it a lot and think the belt works.

I think you made the right call, Mrs. T. If people want to look at photos, there are lots out there. Frankly, if I never see another picture of this sad day, it is fine with me.

The important thing is they were there, and they were perfect as representatives for all of us who grieve for the families and loved ones - indeed, we grieve for the whole country.

I guess it was the right thing to do, especially with the way the conversations can go on the blog sometimes. There definitely are pictures that are available if they want to see them.

I actually watched the entire ceremony and I thought she looked beautiful and I thought the President gave a touching speech.

So, does anyone have a link to another site that we can go to that has the info on the dress and coat that Michelle wore to Texas?

Leah, I actually don't know of another site that actually gives all that info. Sometimes huffpost might mention the designers, but they didn't even have pics of Mrs. O at the Memorial in the style section. This one might be a lost cause or maybe you can ask Mrs. T if she can still find out that info, eventhough there is no actual post.

Mrs. T,

I think you could have gone either way on this one, but I think it's best in such cases to follow your instincts. So I'm glad you stayed on the side of sensitivity and respect for the families. Frankly, I don't care what she wore; and like Operafanatic, I'll be fine if I never see another reminder of this tragedy. I agree with Nyon that I would hate to see some of the types of comments and spats develop in such a thread as we sometimes have here.

This is a sad time for our country, and it's a miniscule sacrifice on our part to give up a couple of photos of the First Lady's attire for the day. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims who are still recovering and to the families of those who've departed.

Thanks for the understanding everyone. The way I go about posting involves looking through all of the relevant images on Getty. They just made me so sad! So, right or wrong, my instinct was not to post.
