Fabulous Frock

Image by Susan Walsh / AP Images

First Lady Mrs. O debuted a new knee-length sheath dress to attend the presentation of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award at the White House this evening. Wide panels of coordinating grey fabric run diagonally across the length of the dress and bodice, meeting at the right shoulder, under a coordinating flower-like adornment. The dress features a coordinating belt in a tonal grey-purple, which sits at the natural waistline. Silver pumps and a polished updo complete the look - one of our favorties of recent months. And sadly, we can't find a photo worthy of how fabulous Mrs. O looks in this ensemble (at least not from AP or Reuters)! For now, you can have a peek here.

Perhaps this look signals exciting things to come for tomorrow night?

Update #1: Mrs. O wear a grey sheath dress, from the Moschino Pre-Spring 2010 collection.

Update #2: We were able to secure an image. Hooray!

My thoughts exactly Nyon! She looks wonderful and seems to be enjoying every minute of FLOTUS.

No matter where I am in the world, I check this site before I fall asleep to see what's new and be inspired and tonight she does not disappoint, she never does. I absolutely love Mrs. O in her sheaths. Do you know anyone who can rock gray like she does in this frock and what interesting symmetry and is that a brooch/bow. Delightful!!!!

The TENT that the have erected at the White House for the state dinner tomorrow night looks AWFUL

http://www.politico.com/click/stories/0911/big_tent_politics.html

I thought when they had state dinners at the WH they were inside of the WH!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 12:44 AM | Registered CommenterLeah D

Rodarte??? She continues to pull us forward with her style. She chose an artsy dress for a decidedly liberal crowd.

@ Leah D
Neither the State Dining Room or the East Room could accommodate 320 guests. That's why the tent was erected. Ms. Rogers & Co. have this down pat. Trust.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 1:58 AM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

McKinley,
I understand that they needed to accommodate a large number of people, but they could have invited less guests.
To have a State Dinner for a foreign leader and then have it in a tent just does not seem proper.
Imagine if President Obama and First Lady Michelle were invited to a state dinner in another country and it was held in a tent instead of Buckingham Place or some other historical setting it would be down right ridiculous!
I can see the headlines now --- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visits the White House during the Obama's first state dinner and dines IN A TENT!
I think this is a huge mistake!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 2:11 AM | Registered CommenterLeah D

Provincial minds can find fault with anything under the sun. Does "tent" conjure up images of gingham tablecloths, ants, and turkey-on-wheat? Instead of calling it a tent, let's call it a pavilion. This should inject the affair with the ritz that some think is lost in a word. This is a State Dinner with Mrs. O at the helm. If she decided to have it in a treehouse, it would only be fab-u-lous.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 2:39 AM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

Well I am not the one that first called it a tent.
There are articles all over the internet that say it is a TENT, including Politico.com

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 2:45 AM | Registered CommenterLeah D

I love this site, but I'm always slightly annoyed (maybe that's too strong of a word) when there's a post that lovingly described Mrs Obama's latest outfit but doesn't yet have a picture.

I understand I could just go and search for the picture myself (and yes, I even understand I could not visit the site at all if it bothers me that much, but I love the site too much for that!) but it feels anti-climatic to read about it but then being told a clear picture hasn't been published yet.

I understand also that quite often within minutes or hours the post is updated with actual pictures but I just wanted to express my frustration during the few times there isn't a picture yet.

I feel (and of course this isn't my site so I don't even know if I should say this) that a post shouldn't be published until a suitable picture is found or the post published with whichever picture the author used when writing down the description, which can then be updated later when clearer pictures arrives.

I feel silly typing such a long comment over an issue that happens infrequently, but they are my thoughts all the same.

If I've said it once, I'll say it again, sheath dresses were made for the First Lady. She has the height and stunning figure to pull it off. This dress is first class. I can't wait to see some close up's.

The comments regarding "the tent" are from people who want to see the Obama's fail in everything. It has been known for weeks that the dinner would be outdoors and no one has seen the inside so why the negativity before the event has even taken place ?

Fact - if the Obama's found a cure for world poverty, AIDS, child abuse, female genital mutilation, swine flu, the Middle East crisis and cancer there would still be people ready to tear them down. I love the fact that they are both confident enough to do their own thing and not allow negativity to get them down.

I hope the event tonight is a major success as I am sure it will be. I can't wait to see Michelle's gown.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 3:59 AM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

The Indian people already know. Someone in an earlier thread linked to the India Times article about the tent. Sounded like they used Politico for their information.

I expect it to be on the plush side and elegant. Remember those Arab sheiks who lived (maybe still do) in very elaborate tents? In one picture I saw of the tent being constructed it looked like a roped off path leading up to it. Was grass underneath, but I expect it will be red carpet and ritzy ropes come Tuesday night. And I expect it to be well lighted and look nothing at all like conceptions being entertained here of a tent. Michelle and Desiree have pulled off a whole slew of major productions this year without a glitch. I'm not worried. It won't be shabby.

And it has been done before, by the Clintons, I think.

Three events for Michelle on Tuesday: 9:15 am the Obamas welcome the Singhs to the white House--big production. 2 pm an event in the East Room on the history and protocol of state dinners. 7 pm the Obamas welcome the Singhs on the North Portico and the rest of the event follows. Wonder if she'll wear 3 new outfits?

All three will be live streamed by the White House. C-Span will not do the afternoon event but will air the others plus the presidents press conference. C-Span's broadcast appears to be after the evening event. Will start at 9 pm and promises Michelle's pre-dinner remarks about the dinner (maybe the afternoon event?), guests on their arrival and the toasts.

Then on Wednesday, the president gets to pardon the turkeys and the Obamas will do a service event in the afternoon. Thanksgiving at the White House, and on Friday Michelle receives the official White House Christmas tree from West Virginia. It will be displayed in the Blue Room. So says Robert Gibbs.

This is pure elegance!!! I always love her sheaths, and this one is especially stunning because of all the extra detail which adds interest but doesn't detract from those clean, sleek lines which show how amazingly toned she is!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 6:53 AM | Registered CommenterMsG

The back of the dress is equally interesting. The silver pumps go perfectly with the outfit.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 7:40 AM | Registered CommenterBevi

Michelle looks great. Elegant while standing out from the crowd. The White House dining rooms can not accommodate the 400 guests expected for the State Dinner. Many events have been held in tents and they have been nothing short of elegant. I am not worried at all. Michelle did a wonderful job hosting the summit in the US and I expect nothing less from her and her staff today. Michelle is growing into her job nicely.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 8:10 AM | Unregistered Commenterlisa

This dress is complicated, but doesn't she make it look easy! Grey/pewter/silver shades can be tricky but FLOTUS does quite well wearing those tones. I am intrigued by the structural details of this dress...A HOME RUN !

Those tents - shamianas - are used in India for large parties. There they are very colorful. But not very classy-looking, IMO. The Brits call them "marquees". They are used here for large parties. They are very hard to decorate because they are literally a blank canvas - this will not have the charm that the elegant State Dining Room has. But they, like the Clintons (who had 700 in a tent for a previous official visit by an Indian prime minister), wanted to have more than 140 guests.

BTW, Lynn Sweet reminds us that this is not a state visit as the guest of honor is the prime minister, not the president of India. To the best of my knowledge, we have never had a visit from the president of India. (For a parallel, Queen Elizabeth II was entertained at a state dinner; PM Gordon Brown would be entertained at an official dinner.)

ORIGAMI IN GREY

Now see, this is just one of the reasons why I adore Mrs.O - she keeps us guessing! And, even though this IS a sheath dress, it is a sheath dress with personality and attitude! LOVE the champagne heels...sweet.

Can't wait for tonight!!!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 9:30 AM | Registered CommenterRocky

In a post the other day I mentioned that the WH was reporting it was erecting a "shamiana" - an Indian wedding (or banquet) tent on the WH lawn. A shamiana is a flat roofed canvas structure, with a scalloped edge around the roof canvas, and in India it is usually very brightly colored, quite decorated.

The monstrosity that is going up in front of the portico side of the WH is an abomination. It is absolutely ugly. It looks like a Boy Scout Camp dining hall. Apparently it is bullet- and weather-proof.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 9:31 AM | Unregistered CommenterBeeGee

She does look great in the gray. I do not like all of her fashion choices however this is really good one. I generally do not like the outfits by Jason Wu. In my "opinion" they do not reflect her personality, age, shape or the fact that she is the FLOTUS. I hope she does not wear him tonight!!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 9:32 AM | Unregistered Commentershyril

this dress is absolutely beautiful.

as for the tent, it's not the first time nor will it be the last time that a state dinner has been held in a tent at the WH. this is not your average wedding tent, there's absolutely no reason to get your undies in a bunch. Leah D. i'm sure you would have been equally horrified by the prospect of Jackie O. hosting a state dinner on a boat ride over to mt. vernon; imagine that, hosting world leaders MILES away from the WH. oh the horror! how undignified! seriously, relax.

I just caught a glimpse of our Michelle on live stream from White House and she's wearing an orange brocade coat and dress. She looked lovely.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 9:39 AM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

The protocol lady from Clinton's administration was on C-Span this morning. Apparently the Clintons used the tent several times. The lady said that it is a beautiful building and that you would have no idea that it is a tent when you are in it.

On Friday night C-Span will be showing their special touring the White House including the living quarters. It was filmed during the last Bush administration. For those of you who might be interested.

I caught just a glimpse of Michelle. I think perhaps that had it been held outside like originally planned, we may have seen more of her.

Mrs. O looked great at the ceremony for the Indian Prime Minister!!! I would bet that is Isabel Toledo. The fabric of that dress tells me Mrs. O knows how to respect culture and look great doing it. And those legs!!!! I mean they are shining honey...lol. Can't wait to see what she wears for the 2:00 p.m. run through of the state dinner.

Mrs-O looks ravishing in the pictures of the arrival ceremony! I wish I knew how to discribe the color of what she is wearing. It's an earthy color which reminds me of indian spices like turmeric, but it also calls to mind the color of persimmons. Perfect for the season, perfect for her skin tone, compliments the outfit of the prime minister's wife, and the combination of the fabri and the colr says "India, we welcome you."

Who the hell complains about a tent? A tent like they just threw the people in a tent with mosquitoes, LORD please some folk because I don't know what else to say. Its official jumped the shark lol lol lol lol Hey I don't know if you know but alot of celebrations in India happen in tents too and they are beautiful. Its their state dinner and they are doing it their way, heck Clinton's had beautiful tent, actually that same tent. LORD LORD LORD LORD LORD LORD... .LOL life is funny

Love the dress and coat from this morning, nice and simple, color is cool. And the gray origami dress from last night is interesting and unique, beautiful. Her skin is flawless, jeez... i am jealous.

briana, some people should just be ignored. ANother faux outrage that the Obama's haters are trying to drum out to discredit them. There's an email being circulated accusing the first family of renaming "Christmas" trees "holiday" trees and claiming they told people making the ornaments that no religious images are allowed. Snopes investigated and has proven the rumors to be FALSE. I'm so sick of the campaign of rumors, lies and slime to deligitimize this president. Case in point: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/24/michelle-obama-photo-goog_n_368760.html. Disgusting isn't it?

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 12:07 PM | Unregistered Commentershyril

I have a new favorite dress - at least for the near future. This is fantastic.

In India tents are considered a very festive venue, so I seriously doubt the guests of honor will think twice about it. I have given parties for 400 in tents, and let me assure you: a blank slate is your friend. You can make it your own, and the White House will. Also, it's not like the guests will be confined to the outdoors, complete with port-a-potties. I'm sure there will be access to the beautiful rooms in the White House, but there is no one room there which will accomodate 400 people at a formal dinner.

Anyway - great dress, great shoes, great pin!

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 12:19 PM | Registered Commenteroperafanatic

Brina, look at the pics on Yahoo. You can see the shoes there.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 12:39 PM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

Once again she looks terrific.

Is the bow on the left part of the dress or a trinket she has added?

I don't see a problem with the tent/pavilion, more people require more space - why limit your party size when you've got acres of land to use. Actually, the most sophisticated events often happen in tents. Trump weddings, movie star weddings, Oscar parties and the best fashion shows.

Can't wait to see what MO will choose to wear to the dinner in the pavilion.

And it will be fabulous. Just wait and see.
