Homeward Bound

Image by Scanpix Norway / Reuters

The president and first lady left Oslo, Norway this morning to return to Washington, DC.

Of note is Mrs. O's choice of suit, the camel and black Narciso Rodriguez ensemble worn during the inauguration for the "We Are One" concert. Several pieces first and last seen during the inauguration have been reintroduced in the past few days by the first lady, perhaps signaling the significance of the occasion.

Congratulations, President Obama. One your having won the N. Peace Prize speaks volumes to me. The controversial issues surrounding your winning the prize fly's over the heads of most people. I totally "get it" so just continue to do the good works that your doing for the country & you will in the end surpass the achievements for which they say you are lacking. I disagree. Your basically ahead of your time & some people don't recognize the hand writing on the wall. Good Luck I keep you in my prayers, the family as well. You have a beautiful First Lady we love Michelle, You & she are a class act !! Secole...

I really like this camel colored coat with the black boots. Wow!!! Very clean, tailored lines. Her chignon hairstyle is so regally chic! Mr. President is also dapper from head to toe. Check out the tie, ice blue! Well, that's only my take on the color. I Bless Them and their Family!!!

This beige and black color combination is always a WINNER!!! It is both classic and sophisticated. Great choice. I loved it in January 2009 and I love it now. It is a great "go-back-to" outfit.

Her Noble Peace Prize ceremonial gown was not one of my favorites. Mrs O was holding the gown up from the floor as she walked or stood the entire evening. Was the hem too long??? And the RUFFLES on the jacket made her look like someone's grandmother from 1898. That entire look made Mrs O look much older than she really is. The good news is this...Mrs O has THREE more years of fashion to go!! Hopefully, her choices will mature as she does. Happy New Year to my fellow Mrs O fashion followers!!!!!!!!!!

This ensemble is one of my favourites. As always, she looks sensational. Congratulations to the President for his award which was well deserved in my opinion.

When I read that she borrowed the Bochic earrings, I started to think "Oh well maybe she borrowed alot of the big ticket items like the dresses and maybe some of the designer clothes' figuring as long as its reported somewhere, it's okay.

So now when I see repeat stuff (non J Crew) I'm more surprised, like the "Oh cool, she kept that", it shows her awesome personal style that she can rewear alot of the stuff and likes it enough to keep it.

I don't know if the repeating of more stuff from a year ago (the turquoise J Crew jacket, this camel coat) is to reference the inauguration so much as a sign it is getting really cold again lol.

Maybe we have seen these outfits again because it is WINTER and she can wear them now! Kind of hard to wear what she wore in January in July. Looks great though!

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 9:49 AM | Unregistered CommenterAlisa

Hey Phyllis. It looks like the dress is made of some sort of stretchy material. I'm thinking the bottom was so heavy it pulled the top down too much and caused the dress to drag. What do you think?

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 9:56 AM | Registered Commentermarabout40

One of my favorite looks from Mrs O's closet and love that she paired it with boots this time. About the only look I didn't like was the gold dress combo otherwise she hit it out the park.

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10:08 AM | Unregistered Commenterlisa

Are these perhaps one of the pairs of Robert Clergerie boots she recently ordered from France?

I recognized the coat ensemble right away - this was one of my favorite outfits that's she's worn. Hard to believe that concert was nearly one year ago. I like the coat with these boots! This is a good lesson in the value of a classic neutral coat. This ensemble will give her years of wear. She can combine it with any color or pair of shoes/boots to change up the look. Nice, classy chic.

I'd like to see a closeup picture of the darling little earrings she's wearing!

I love this look and glad to see her wear it again. It's so sleek and modern and the color combination is more interesting than black and white. Loves it!

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10:23 AM | Unregistered CommenterTracy

I have always loved this ensemble and it thrills me to see her re wearing clothes from last year and mixing and matching new pieces in with them. It is just what the rest of us do and I like it. I believe that although she enjoys nice clothes she primarily thinks of herself as a professional and not a decorative first lady. The clothes are just one part of the picture but her primary role is working as first lady.

IT'S BACK!

This outfit is so bad, it makes me wanna slap somebody!

Why is that a camel colored coat just says
"I am styling and profiling and the flyest thing on the block?'"

I just love this outfit! I am so glad that it made the Oslo trip! What a way to depart, Mrs. Obama!

Ms. T,

I know it's a bit too much to ask, but are you planning on coming to the Sunshine State for a booksigning? I would love to have mine sign and have a chance to meet the face behind this wonderful site. Thank you.

Mrs. T., did you see the Telegraph report that Mrs. O has ordered a pair of black thigh-high boots from French designer Roger Clegerie? Mrs. O in thigh highs! I can't wait.

One of my all time favorites. I was hoping we would see this ensemble again this winter. Love it with the boots. You rock Mrs O!

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11:37 AM | Registered Commenterdonnanoshock

I could see this outfit once a month and never get tired of it...it's my all time favorite. On Getty Images you can see that brown leather laser cut McQueen belt poking through, it punches up this ensemble . Love it. Those boots are sharp and just the right accessory, on some sites they appear brown, while on others they appear black. Our Michelle looks so sharp! Do these people ever get jet lag? They always seem so refreshed and gracious. WELCOME HOME!

This is one of my favorite looks, I was hoping to see it again.Love the outfit with the boots, last seen she wore black tights.

Ohhhhhh Mrs O, so stylish, so fresh, so captivating and so beautiful. Mr President so Handsome and Debonair!!!!!!

They sure packed in a lot in 24hours or 36 hours, Mrs O seems ready to go home and be with the girls and mom.

LOVE 'EM BOTH.

Any thing Michelle wears is GREAT! she has good taste & looks awesome in her clothes. The N.R. suite is classy looks good w/ boots love the camel color. The gown she wore @ the state dinner was exquisite just awesome!!! She could of been a high top fashion model if she wanted to but, we all know she was busy @ Princeton or Harvard getting her Education. Barack & she definitely accent each other well. To me the choices they make, can't go wrong & Mr. Prez is always sharp!

Does everyone see why this time, the belt works? Even with the skirt material showing through, it is in the right color family as the t-shirt. It elongates her waist. Lovely. Great proportion.

Hooray! I was wondering when she was going to wear this fabulous ensemble again. It is so classic and so beautiful...definitely a long-time keeper.

Hey, Time Magazine just put up a sideshow of photo's on Obama's first year as president and I came across this photo of Mrs.O in a dress we've never seen before. I believe it was taken last Thursday when they hosted a holiday party for members of Congress. I also think the dress she is wearing is this one from Anne Klein, accessorized with a signature pin of hers of course.

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 7:50 PM | Registered CommenterAri

This camel and black ensemble was her best look ever. The most stylish and the most flattering.

In another photo her boots appear to be dark brown calf length and she is wearing that very wide perforated belt, but at her waistline - not up high. (Do I hear cheers from some quarters?)

Ari, that frock is nice and very affordable. I love the colour and Michelle always wears colours well.

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 8:43 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

This is her BEST outfit--more modern and LOVE it with boots! Even BETTER than the first time she wore it! Neutrals always look so RICH and they're perfect for her gorgeous coloring.

Friday, December 11, 2009 at 9:01 PM | Unregistered Commenterfh

Thanks Ari, you're on the ball, great research! It's ironic that when I saw that dress when looking up Anne Klein skirts, I immediately thought of FLOTUS. It's almost intuitive now when we see something, we find ourselves saying "I wonder would Michelle like this?, or, I bet she would look good in that, or that reminds me of our girl" It's a fashionista's game.

Ari,

That red holiday party dress is just fabulous. Perfect for Christmas and New Year's shin digs. I love her in a sheath. She has the kind of figure that was made to show off a sheath dress.

Ari, Thanks for the photo of Mrs. O. in the red jacquard sheath....it's beautiful! If it is the Anne Klein, I wish we could see a larger pic from the front, because the twist of fabric around the waist is a fabulous touch!

She also wore the olive green leather gloves from the inauguration! Lovely, sophisticated yet so down to earth and unassuming indeed.

Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 5:01 AM | Registered CommenterCamille

All the Oslo outfits were fabulous on Mrs. O. (except the too long gown). Also, it makes sense to have her hair in an upsweep. Going in and out of Air Force 1 it gets very windy and she doesn't have to fuss with it. Very, very chic.

Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 5:19 AM | Unregistered Commentercapitolhiller

Camille, thanks for the link, there are some good shots there. We could tell that she incorporated items from her Inaguration wardrobe into her Nobel wardrobe. It's sentimental and reflective of her pride in POTUS' accomplishments. To those of us that follow our Michelle, that tenderness is of no surprise. The color of Calvin Klein ensemble looks different without a ton of flashbulbs and lights. It's still a hit!

Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 10:08 AM | Registered CommenterCharlene in Detroit

IMHO (in my humble opinion) this is the absolute best outfit that she has ever worn and I was hoping to see it again. I plan to have an imitation made for me. Someone had posted a pattern link a while back McCalls or Vogue, perhaps. I can't seem to find that information. If the poster is still reading could you give us that information again, I would appreciate it very much. As a republican (small r) I don't want to say she looks 'regal' but she really does. I am enjoying the up dos and the little surprise of curls she offered on Thursday, so-o-o-o sophisticated.

@Mark, you really have to tell us what your acronyms mean, I am new to texting/blogging language.

Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 10:21 AM | Registered Commenterdenisegirl

@ Ari and others - Just a bit of background on the red dress photo. It was taken by Callie Shell for Time and is not available for purchase/use elsewhere. Unfortunately it seems unlikely that I'll be able to feature it on the blog. Agree that the dress appears to be Anne Klein. I've reached out to them to confirm.

@ Marilyne - No plans to come to the sunshine state, sadly. I'll let you know if things change! (I am starting to put together an event in Boston for February.)

Re: my reference to the inauguration outfits. I agree that we're seeing these ensembles again, in part, because of the cold weather. But part of me also thinks that they have a "special" quality that made them appropriate for the trip to Oslo.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend! It is chilly in NYC!

I imagine she is wearing her hair up so often now to either a)give it a rest from all of the heat styling or b) disguise heat damage or c)both. She looks gorgeous with hair up or down, I just hope her hair will be healthy and make her happy.

Now I can't get the Simon & Garfunkle song out of my head. (that reference ages me, doesn't it?)

This outfit is perfect in every way. The addition of the boots & Alexander McQueen cutout belt add lots of fun to it, too.

Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 8:56 PM | Registered CommenterMelcy

The camel and black is so flattering...and the belt. I think this is the belt she wore a awhile back, with the J. Crew goldy/patterned skirt. I was not a fan then, and have not been a fan of her wide belts. THIS time though it works very well. Somehow reminds me of New Orleans, glimpsing a regal villa behind a wrought iron fence. All lacy and proper and hidden and inviting at once. (NOT that I'm comparing Mrs. O. to a house or anything!). It's that glimpse of the light through the dark. And the perfect placement of the belt, lower, around her waist. And then the boots have the little buckle. So charming.

@ari: how did you link to the yahoo pics with "here" rather than having to include the very lengthy address? My life would be complete if I knew how to do that (ha).

Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11:34 PM | Unregistered CommenterRossley

I was glad to see this beautiful suit again - I loved it the first time, and still do.

My favorite look of this trip was the grey Lanvin. Just flawless. I'd love to know about the pin with it. I'm betting Chanel, and real stones.

I did love the jacket with the Alaia dress, but the dress itself was not her best look. In the picture with the jacket, she looks relaxed and gorgeous. In the dress alone, I don't think she looks as relaxed and comfortable, leaving me to believe she was not crazy about it either.
