Double O

The April 2009 cover of O was unveiled today, and features a very spring-like First Lady Mrs. O. This marks the first time anyone other than Oprah Winfrey has appeared on the cover of the magazine since its inception in 2000. For the cover, Mrs. O wears a coral Michael Kors dress and a soft yellow Dear Cashmere cardigan. In her signature style, Mrs. O belted the look with the same clear waist cincher seen yesterday. (Update: Thanks to Mrs. C who has confirmed the belt is Sonia Rykiel.) Oprah wears a lilac shirt dress by Rachel Roy New York. Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times has the full scoop here, including this fabulous quote from our First Lady:

"I know that all I can do is be the best me that I can. And live life with some gusto. Giving back is a big part of that. How am I going to share this experience with the American people? I'm always thinking about that."

Oprah and Gayle are also discussing their February visit to the White House on the show today. When suggested that Mrs. O has been likened to Eleanor Roosevelt, Oprah replies:

"[Michelle Obama] is not likened to anybody. She is her own. She is so 21st century that there really isn't anyone you can compare her to."

Well spoken O!

In my wanderings on the net, I came across something really hilarious. Nothing to do with Mrs.O but has to do with the Kennedys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs9gOrGU8wE It's so funny I thought I will post it here.

Lily, I guess you showed me! right! And in such an "understanding" and "tolerant" way. Wow! I guess that is the right way to comment withiut "forcing MY opinion down the throats of others…" in such a "non-show-offy and arrogant" manner, and without even a "presumption and "know-it-all ness” of my perspective and my motives, right! The funny thing is, I wasd complimenting Mrs. O's style (or so I thought). I wrote:"This outfit on Mrs. O: Pitch Perfect." However, I think I will take your advice and "take it elsewhere" so that the people come here to the site "solely to appreciate Mrs Obama and her fashion (and not to tell off posters they do not like)can do so in relative peace." Bye everyone. I hope you continue to enjoy the site.

BTW: Look up Ann's reponse to me above. So nice, polite, and friendly!

I actually prefer this to the Vogue cover. To me it looks natural, spontaneous, and I love the fresh colors- coral is amazing on Mrs. O.

Jojo, don't leave. Your comment was perfectly acceptable. Just try to ignore the 'meanies' who attack you just because you don't like the belt! It's so ridiculous, just find the humor in it.

Speaking of that belt, I looked everywhere for one yesterday. I found Tracy Reese has quite a few, Arden B has some and I read even Claire's Stores will have a line of them this spring. So, lots of different price points, but lots of ways to incorporate the look. Happy shopping!

Lily:

This is a "fashion" blog. There was nothing wrong with JoJo's response.

We critique fashion on this site.

Instead of telling JoJo to leave, why don't you follow your own advice if you are overly sensitive about constructive criticism.

I don't undertand some of the bloggers on this board. If you don't agree with everything that Mrs. O wears, some take offense.

JoJo:

Please don't let anyone run you off of this blog. Your comments are welcome. Please keep posting.

JoJo, please don't leave. Perhaps half of what Lily said was directed at me and I am not leaving. So stick around, the blog is about fashion and style.

Hard to top Oprah's comment about Mrs. O looking so "21st century." She looks so darn sharp and perfectly put together in this photo - love how the belt is her single accessory focal point. Color-wise, this cover has so much punch - that unto itself is visually uplifting as Winter drags on.

As much as I love everything about this cover photo, it does remind me of how I feel seeing photos of myself standing next to my tall, sophisticated size 2 daughter! Just a reminder to all of us that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes!

I like both outfits. They both give a sense of the approaching spring. However, I don't like the cover. I love that two of my favourite ladies are on it, but it's improperly styled or staged - don't know which would be the correct term. Beautiful clothes but there isn't any cohesiveness between the two of them. In fact, the shapes seem to fight each other.

This is the first time that someone other than Oprah is on the cover and it's as if the Editor (not Gayle, who is the Editor at large, whatever that is, but the Editor in Chief) didn't know how what to do with it. Frankly, when I first saw the cover, I thought it was a draft. I was surprised when Oprah held it up on her show as the final.

I'll still buy it . . . but there have been far more memorable covers on O. Sorry Oprah . ..

Jersey Girl and others:

No, you guys certainly aren't going to hijack this site and turn it into your very own "critiquing" fifedom-

The nonstop pontificating and highhandedness is appallingly arrogant and presumptious and seriously distracts from the original purpose of this site-

The petty, spiteful snark that accompanies some of the posts even where carefully designed to be subtle are simply ridiculous-

A blog dedicated to the first lady suddenly becomes an outlet for anonymous self-aggrandizing, wannabe "critics" who lose sight of the fact that fashion is always subjective and that their particular tastes aren't necessarily reflecive of whats right, correct or even stylish-

But yet on and on they go!

Lily:

What part of "this is a fashion blog" are you not understanding? Are you aware of what "critique" means?

I will continue to critique Mrs. Obama outfits just like everyone else on this site. If you are "drooling" over every outfit and don't want others to comment, I suggest that you don't read what I post.

No one on this site is snarky towards Mrs. O.

Again, follow your advice to JoJo: if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!

Oh this is just a glorious photo of Mrs O - I love it!!

Mrs O is such an inspiration for ALL women. I love checking out blogs to see what she is wearing, what she is doing, what she is eating, her healthy lifestyle. I love her. What an exciting 4 (poss 8 years) it's going to be. I've NEVER been interested in any first lady until Michelle turned up. Like others have said, I love the belt. She throws together such fantastic pieces and is not scared to take a risk with clothes.

I love what she's wearing here!

Why does Oprah look so distressed, though?
