Mrs-O.org Site Changes

For the past few weeks, we've been preparing to migrate Mrs-O.org to a new platform. The migration begins this afternoon, and will take 12-24 hours to complete. Once migrated, the new and improved Mrs-O.org will include user registration, as well as a new discussion board (by request!). There are still a few things to be worked out in terms of site function and aesthetics, but we'll happily fine tune with your collective input. As always, email me at contact@mrs-o.org with any feedback.

Update: Thank you for all of the positive feedback thusfar! To answer a few other inquiries that have come up:

- The site is still transitioning from old to new, which I believe is why not all of the photos are loading yet. This should be resolved by tomorrow morning.

- User registration is a feature that was requested by a wide range of Mrs-O.org regulars. All content on the site will be visible without registeration, but to automatically comment or participate in the discussion board, you will need to have a member account. You actually can still comment without registering, however the comment will sit in moderation until it is manually approved.

- For those having trouble registering, some errors may be due to the site migration. If you're still having problems tomorrow, please do let me know.

- On a Mrs. O note - We hope the first lady is enjoying her mini-vacation in London! We heard she was wearing a Hussein Chalayan silk dress at the House of Commons yesterday.

PHOTOS: Thank you for the emails re: photos. They're not loading for us either! They may need to be manually re-uploaded which we'll begin ASAP this morning. Thanks for your patience as we work to correct this.

RE: Technical problems and solutions.

It occurs to me that any discussion of technical problems and solutions could be grouped together on one message board in chat. I'm going to start a board there.

It also occurs to me that this will be of no use to people having trouble registering, since without registration, one cannot post in chat.

:~} (that's supposed to be a facial expression that shows combined frustration and humor)

I've noticed a lot of pro- Sarah Brown fashion choices lately but I haven't seen any pictures of her. Is there a Mrs.B.org? does anyone have any links to the photos from Mrs.O in London w/ Mrs. Brown?

Hi Mrs. T,

I too miss identifying a post by the time it was submitted. Can we bring that feature back? Or, can we number the posts?

@ceegee go to the top right side of the page where it says register and follow the prompts.

Oh boy. I understand that Mrs.O is human and makes mistakes, but i'm noticing a troubling pattern with her. She tends to go overboard with layering colors and textures and sometimes she adds a belt when it is really unnecessary. That photo of her with the tunic embellished with 4 different layers of patterns and flowers, with a black and white checkered belt and purple buckle layered with a yellow and a lavender cardigan, silver necklaces and bright purple watch was just....wow. The layering of the cardigans was cute and complemented her, but everything else at the bottom was not good at all. It was just plain gaudy.

The new site is very nice. I agree with others that it would be nice to see the time a post was made.

I am trusting that MrsT will have the technical glitches worked out soon, but I must say I like the color scheme! Looking forward to all of the updates.

Christina thank you for the Flickr link - those photo's are great! A fab candid view behind the scenes and all those things that we can all relate to (Reggie's Egypt photo's on the laptop - *how* many times have we shared photo's like that?!) But .... you came to London and didn't TELL ME?!?!?!?! Huff puff humff.

Alsace - you just need to go back to your profile page and change your screen name. It's very standard to do this so I don't think Mrs T needs to draw a map. I'd love to see the time back on postings however, that'd be handy. Photo's? They'll come, they'll come.

I'd like to say something about that comment about Mrs O needing to learn that quirky individual choices may not be suitable for her new role ...

I've thrown that criticism at a few Royals over the years. People who have no idea that their (sometimes admittedly) cool clothes look less cool and even weird when photographed. Certain details are great at the lunch table with a friend, but look strange in official photos or newspapers. With Mrs O, I have never felt that. That belt is a great belt. It's strong, and she likes playing with it on different looks, but I don't see it as a weak link. I also don't think she just grabs things. Ever! Sometimes I think she'll prepare for a certain event with GREAT attention to exactly how she wants to look (as indeed we all would!), but generally, day to day, I think she's naturally a thoughtful dresser.

As for evolving to dress for the big league.... We all came here (well most of us) because we love the woman's style as it is! I hope she never does evolve if it means leaving behind her individuality. It's my opinion that Michelle Obama IS the big league. First Lady or not. She may not always wear things that people get, but she is a powerful individual with fabulous style and I think it's the world's job to get used to that, rather than for her to "develop" anything. Oh, the idea of her suddenly looking like A. N. Other celeb. Gah.

Evolving as we all do, embracing new looks, and trying out new things, then yes, I look forward to that. But smoothing off all the quirks. Dear God protect us from that.

That top - I'm so shocked it was Hussein Chalayan. It looked - well, frankly: summery and jolly and wearable. And those aren't words I'd ever use in connection with that designer!!! Sorry Ms Chalayan but you do do some seriously serious concept stuff.

It appears the photos are up and we have a new post of an outfit I have not seen, have I? Agree again that it's nice to have the posting times up so we can refer to a particular post.

I agree that Mrs. O is a big league player. She is entitled to shock some of us every now and then!

I love the new layout and design! I'm also really happy you stuck with a clean, basic look as well as the black background. When you first announced you were changing things up, I was a little worried that the "feel" of the site would change---- but I should have known better than to doubt you! It's wonderful.

Just some ideas:

*A comment spell check would be lovely for those whose browsers don't check for them (because the double posts to correct errors are silly.

*Remove the ability to see e-mails of registered members. Registering is free, and it's easy to make a false e-mail if someone wanted to. Someone with ill intentions could easily collect names (some use their full names in e-mail), and e-mail address for spam, harassment, etc. Instead, you could have a tiny inbox for everyone.

*An Ignore/Hide feature. Some comments or people grate on others nerves for various reasons. Being able to have their posts "hidden" would be lovely.

^Also, being able to directly reply to another's comment would be wonderful. For example one could say

@Lily's post at 12:23:39 September 23, 2008

And there would be a link to that comment for anyone who wanted to follow up.

I know we have a discussion board, but these are just a few ideas to consider.

@Rory - To change your real name to your user name,

1) log in

2) click on your name, top right, which will take you to your profile.

3) you can then enter your user name as your "display name" which will show as author of your posts.

@Kimberly C. - Yours are excellent suggestions. I, too, do not like that in order to get mail from someone through my profile, my email address is there for anyone to see. This is very dangerous. Anyone can register here and collect emails (much more spam for everyone). It's really quite vital that those email addresses be hidden, but still allow messages to flow from members.

@Posh Tater, Willow, IVA and others --- A quick reply. Am dashing out so can't do a long post.

I feel Mrs. O's attitude toward fashion is that it is fun and personal, not yet that it is a philosophy or a job. It would be lovely if she could stay that way, but I doubt she will be able to. That's because words like "private time" and "private space" lose all meaning in situations like a sightseeing trip to London where every move is accompanied by thousands of phones set on photo.

The outfits in London were illuminating for me. I felt they indicated a transitional moment between the old attitude and the new. Can't bet on it, but I suspect we will see her becoming more self-conscious about it all. For some, that will be a loss. I just see it as inevitable.

Anyone who thinks she hasn't been constantly evolving needs to check out her looks during the early stages of the electoral campaign. The change since that time is remarkable. As she is an intelligent, responsive person, I expect she will continue to change and evolve.

And for the record, since I see her style up to now as quite middle-of-the-road, the quirkier the better. Bring it on! Sadly though, this would involve acceptance of a certain loss of privacy.

From NBC Washington:

Michelle Obama took her two young daughters to see the Lion King at the Lyceum Theater in London's West End as part of Sasha's eighth birthday celebration.

Sasha spent her birthday eve with big sis Malia, 10, and mom in a private box watching the Disney musical with about 2,000 other theatergoers.

"The children were clearly having a good time," an audience member told People. "There was quite a buzz in the theater once people spotted them during the first part."

"I saw the girls skipping back into their box from their private room," the person said.

The show came as the Obamas wrapped up their second day of a surprise tour of London -- an extension of their family vacation without the president, who flew back to Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

The family visited Westminster Abbey and paid a visit to a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, the Coronation Chair and the Lady Chapel of Henry VII during the day yesterday.

The Obamas also toured London's House of Parliament, Big Ben and the "Harry Potter" film set.

On Monday night, Michelle took the girls to a traditional English pub on Monday night where they dined on fish and chips and she chowed down on a sirloin.

Good work Mrs. T! Like the new design and the logo. I can imagine figuring out that just right "O" was difficult considering we have another very famous "O" media queen! Kudos to you!

Wow!!!!! Mrs. O is really looking so youthful in this out fit, She truly has changed what we thot was the look of FIRST LADY. I am so happy to see that you are so self confident in your choices and styles. BTW Happy Birthday Sasha! Really not one of my favs but I'm ok with it.

Change comes with success. I was wondering when this blog was getting a few security features. I liked the old logo but I'll get used to the new one soon. The chat feature should be very popular. This blog was a great idea and is well done. Keep up the great work!

Alsace: Interesting thoughts but I still disagree. It's just an outfit on a trip to London. This is like Sleevegate, a momentary kerfuffle, signifying nothing. Loads of people thought she would stop wearing sleeveless after all that, but of course she hasn't - Mrs O knows who she is and what she likes.

Good job, Mrs. T, on changing "who" to "whom" in your headline!! That does my little grammarian's heart good! :)
