I love the dress. It looks cool and I know it has to be burning up because the president loses the jacket pretty quickly. I love that they can come off a airplane with minimal sleep and look well rested and put together. Hats off to the makeup artist (Ingrid I think her name is) and to Mr. Wright for the hair.

Stunning!

and what makes Mr.s O even more radiant is her interaction with those women in the clinic, they are beaming at her and she is reciprocating their love and affection back.
It's heart warming to think that women in Africa will look at this beautiful graceful intelligent woman who looks like them and will believe that they are self worthy and an asset to their countries.

As for the fashion...the dress is fabulous and looks awesome on the first lady

I have never been prouder with the Obama's
wonderful pictures from the hospital visit here

Yes ma'am!!!!! This was the perfect dress to wear to breakfast and the clinic. Most of the time she was outdoors but she was chic with just the right amount of color. I knew when she wore the black Sophie Theallet at the Sojourner Truth event, that she also got the white version of the dress for the summer. Just gorgeous and she looks glowy and very relaxed. I know she loves wearing her hair up---less fuss in the changing weather but still very pretty. I loved the pictures of the President holding the baby---too sweet!

I too loved the interaction of the Obamas with the people the best. I was reading the pool report from the Politico site, and it stated that the President said that seeing the women at the hospital was the best part of the trip. After spending so much time with politicians, the Obamas love being around the people the best.

PERFECT! 'nuff said.

Ever since MrsO wore the black Sophie Theallet and you Janelle shared your email exchange with the company, I became a huge fan.
Not to be biased or anything, but some colors and designs look better in dark skin. Love the entire Spring 09 RTW of Sophie Theallet.

Beautiful Mrs O.

Love the print dresses on the ladies in Ghana, want a material like that

@mrso2
"second that emotion" amen. Love it.

Had looked at the Sophie Theallet collection after the Sojourner Truth bust unveiling and loved it all. Looked again and don't see this exact dress style, color/striping combo. Maybe the website did not have a complete showing of options or she had a custom order.

Cute dress, clean and simple. Mrs. Obama looks good in Sophie Theallet, and should wear more of her designs.

Two things: One, Michelle Obama has toned down the jewel tones in her trip to Ghana (last night arriving in black, today's outfit). Or perhaps this is a conscious decision by Mrs. Obama so she stands out in a country where bright colors and prints are standard fashion?

Also, where are the African and African-American designers (no, wearing Tracy Reese or Kai Milla once doesn't cut it when she's worn other designers countless times)?! There are some really good ones out there, including from Ghana! Ghana has a vibrant fashion industry. Just as she has done in France, Italy, and Britain, it wouldn't have hurt for her to wear a Ghanaian designer. Why does Mrs. Obama think African or African-American designers aren't worthy to be added to her wardrobe? I realize that her fashions are her choice, but I really question her decision to continually snub black designers.

THE PROFESSOR & THE BEAUTY QUEEN

Tall and tan and young and lovely, Mrs O has captured the beauty and simplicity of Africa. In their interaction with the women, both the President & First Lady are exuding warmth and majesty. I am so enamored by these photos, especially this one:

http://www.daylife.com/photo/0aqUffo1ur3gr

Absolutely adorable! Notice how the President ditches his coat after a while and gets into that 2nd comfortable skin of his. I think they are just relieved to be over all the starchy suits and protocol and just enjoy the company and relax.

Michelle's natural beauty is amplified in this white dress with the stripes adding as a compliment to the exotic beauty of Ghana - Ahhhh...

@ Rocky - great title for them. They are real people. And you can tell this part of their overseas trip is what they are all about. Mingling with real people and being with people who love and respect them, for who they are.

would love to see Mrs. O in an african outfit. I think that would be stunning (maybe something in white or yellow.

Oh Wow, she looks perfect in this dress. It's pretty! It looks cool, crisp and comfortable at the same time.

Thanks for the links everyone! The people of Ghana look so thrilled and happy to see them.

Are they having any type of special dinner for them tonight?

watching the cnnlive link I know Michelle must have teared up a little at Cape Coast, I am watching and I am a little emotional. That is one of my goals to go there.

Love the Sophie Theallet dress. She looks so beautiful and summery.

Just saw a live picture of her at the slave castle. The slacks fit was not very flattering.

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 12:00 PM | Registered Commenterdonnanoshock

@ ann#1 - unfortunately, they are leaving today. So I doubt that. I wish the emergency concerns were such that he had to remain in highly controlled settings, unable to mingle with the huge crowds.

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 12:02 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

Today's dress was a 10, but the outfit at the slave castle was not. First off, the cropped pants are bad on her. Secondly, they were way too tight. Extremely tight. It almost looked like she had on leggings with a top that didn't cover her behind. I could see her panties and everything.

Obviously, she has gained about 15 pounds and those pants no longer fit the way they're supposed to. But that's why you buy new pants or lose weight. They were just way too tight.

This is like a white short sleeve version of what she wore to the Sojourner Truth bust unveiling. I really love the cheerfulness the dress and Mrs Obama give off. And although subtle, it match the POTUS's tie.

Why does Mrs. Obama think African or African-American designers aren't worthy to be added to her wardrobe?

@ Mara - How in the world do you know what Mrs. Obama is thinking?

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 12:40 PM | Registered Commentermrso2

@ ruddy - I did notice that. It's cute since they never really ever do matchy-matchy. What do you think the message is?

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 12:51 PM | Registered CommenterIVA

Tsetse says that she wishes she could see Mrs. O in a traditional African outfit. She probably would have worn one except for the right wing fanatic nuts - O'Reilly, Gingrich, Limbaugh et al, who would use a photo of her to demonize her and tell all their equally nutty fans that she wasnt a real American, she has no allegiance to the US, blah blah blah.
She is gorgeous in these photos. Love to see her warm smile and interactions with people from all walks of life. She reminds me a bit of Princess Diana. Real joy in her smile.

@ mara - As an African-American woman I'm offended you think FLOTUS should wear clothes by African-American designers simply because of race. Do you select your wardrobe based on the color of the designer's skin? I certainly don't and I don't believe most people do. The Obamas have been quoted as saying when they have family gatherings it resembles the UN. By God, her husband's bi-racial!! She knows who she is and what she is. Allow FLOTUS to make her fashion decisions based on what SHE LIKES...not anything else.

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 1:02 PM | Unregistered Commenteravo

@ Mara - Why do you take Mrs. O's choices as "snubbing black designers"? That statment is as ridiculous as Oscar de Laurenta (?sp) saying she shouldn't just wear new designers; She should give the established designers a chance to ddress her also. Again, the lady knows what she likes and wears what she likes. She shouldn't have to pick her clothes based on a quota system.

oo god we have a psychic here;

Mara writes 'Why does Mrs. Obama think African or African-American designers aren't worthy to be added to her wardrobe? I realize that her fashions are her choice, but I really question her decision to continually snub black designers."

Really, please show me where FLOTUS has ever said that african american aren't worthy to be added to her wardrobe? you need to stop making stuff up or may be you should try FOX blogs...

@mara . So Tracy Reese isn't African American, I suppose? And Kai Milla Morris isn't black, either, right?

Whew, after the mantilla-bow-belt disaster I am so glad to see her looking lovely again. Mrs. O: Fitted torso, lower belt, full skirt - A+. Same with simple, fitted sheaths and jewel tones.

I'm sure she will surprise us with a beautiful outfit or dress from Africa in the days to come.

............On a personal note may I just say to Mrs. T that for the last few days I have had some serious personal difficulties. Coming to this site and just "losing" myself in fashion and reading people's comments has helped lift my spirit and has helped me hang on. Mrs. T, I am grateful for your diligent hard work.

This dress is perfect for what she's doing.

Especially since Ghana is famous for not only Kente Cloth but also brilliant colors and bold patterns, she doesn't try to 'compete' with that. The white sleeveless dress with just a touch of color (that also just happens to match her fabulous husband's tie, who just happens to be President of the United States.

What a great look!

Both Mr. and Mrs. O. look simply fabulous!

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 3:04 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

I think Mrs. O looks fabulous today. The fit of her white dress is perfect. What appears to be a wide ribbon belt is in the right place, and she, as always, stands out in the crowd. The Obamas look relaxed and happy to be with these beautiful, warm people. I love the photos from the hospital, and of Pres. O holding the baby. He's so good with babies. They seem to relax in his arms.

I have to admit, though, that last night as I looked at sites of African designers (I posted some links on the "Provocative fashion context for Ghana visit" thread in the chat room), I was drooling over those exquisite African prints, and fantasizing that that she might wear one of those. I adore African prints. They are so color-saturated, full-bodied, and delicious.

But, as someone pointed out above, she would have blended into the crowd in one of those, and I think it's good that it's always easy for the camera to spot her and follow her wherever she goes.

I've missed all of the live coverage, so I've got to read or find video of the speeches, etc.

She's back to this lovely white dress for their send off at the airport. Sasha is wearing a cute, colorful ruffled outfit.

I agree with those above taking Mara to task for insinuating motive as to why Michelle has not worn any Black designers. We have no way of knowing how she operates on her choices amd she is not inclined to enlighten us. For all we know, she could have such clothing in her closet and then again maybe not. "Snub" is so out of place here.

One thing I've learned by watching the campaign is that it is futile to try to goad Obama into doing something just because you might like to see him do it. It appears that his wife has taken that lesson to heart as well. Good for her.

Hey Ladies, writing all the way from Trinidad in the Caribbean.....I am loving the entire "show" Potus and Flotus are simply an adorable couple. I love the crisp, fresh, white dress AND the fact that his tie matches her dress. Flotus looks absolutely gorgeous........as usual. As far as I think she is always appropriately dressed. Wish I could get some of her hand-me-downs. I will be in the USA for the summer so I will be shopping for some cute summer dresses, similar to hers. After all it's summer for the entire year here..Take care ladies.

@ Karen Anne - that is so embarrassing. I had heard about that particular blog and how they went to town hating on Malia for a damn t-shirt. Now they've made international news.

Well, after this trip I have a feeling we will not be seeing those children any time soon. I think they were testing the waters with having them go out to get ice cream with the President, and be seen at the luau and the 4th, as well as this trip. I think that's enough. U give people an inch and they take a mile.

cute, chic and oh, so cool looking.

I just have to say that I am in LOVE with the dresses African women wear. The styles and prints are so attractive. I want a closet full of the dresses like the ones Jill Scott wears in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" on HBO.

Beautiful!

Sophie Theallet seems like such a lovely and optimistic person. Her designs reflect that, don't they? It's a very sophisticated simplicity. Beautiful colors and fabric.

(I wonder if they did coordinate the tie? It compliments Michelle, doesn't it?)

@ IVA...I think you are right. That's a terrible article. Malia's Tee is perfectly appropriate for her age and the days events.

After going thru all the photo's from their trip, I was thinking what an extraordinary childhood these girls are having. Literally seeing the world. It's a shame some people feel like they have the right to attack children. That is never OK with me.

I seriously believe I was African the last time around. I am so in love with Africans and their culture. You know that feeling you get in your heart when you're in love and you see your beloved approaching? I get that every time I'm exposed to Africans, their music, their culture, their voices, etc. Although I never made it to Africa, I spent a few years studying her, and have enjoyed knowing quite a number of her people.

I felt that excitement at seeing this photo of dancers and drummers at the departure ceremony. I can feel their happy, excited energy. I want to be there. ;-)

The cut reminds me of the frocks worn by women in the 1950s - it suits Mrs O perfectly. And the aded stripes of pinks and oranges are such a fun, summery addition. Another ensemble winner from the outstanding Mrs O! :)

Mara, why are you asking us why she doesn't wear AA designers? Why don't you be bold enough to write her and ask her? You seem to have alot of nerve, so ask the source directly.

I love the pic with Mr. O holding the baby (that baby is toooooo cute!!) and Mrs. O smiling in the background. I love the dress and that the color of the stripes are kind of subtle. I also noticed that her and the POTUS are matching, which I think is adorable.

Although this is a fashion blog, and I think we all like to keep it light and enjoyable, I do want to just acknowledge the heartbreak of knowing about and visiting the "Door of No Return" at the Cape Coast Castle, reflected in this photo. I heard Donna Brazille talk about visiting this site on TV last night, and about how her tears mixed with the sweat and tears of the thousands of people who passed through there. She said her most powerful memory was the smell of the flesh, the sweat and tears that still infuses the floors and the walls of the site.

What a poignant site for all of us, but especially for our AA members whose ancestors passed through places like this. And what a triumph for all of us now (except the racists noted above) that the majority of us have elected an AA President.

There is still a long way to go, but we are slowly moving toward "perfecting our union", as Pres. O often says.

The Obamas at the site:

A profound remembrance

Great little cut out flats with the Sophie Theallet dress! And I like her bangles on this trip. Lots of different ones - she looks like she's having fun with them

Personally, I'd like to see MO wear some pieces by designers like Sika Designs (made in Ghana, with Ghanaian fabrics) when she's back here in the US. I think that would send a powerful message that she has actually incorporated this look into her wardrobe. If she just did it in Ghana, some might think it was patronizing.

Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 6:45 PM | Registered Commenteroperafanatic

Mara, I am actually speechless over your comment. It borders on delusional. And in what conversation, email, letter, phone call did she tell you about her decision to snub AA designers.

REMINDER: Just b'c you have a thought, it doesn't mean you need to post it. Keep your loony tunes to yourself.

Anyways, I think she looks lovely as usual. I love how her dress matches the colors of the dress of the woman with whom she is greeting.
