An Inventive Remix

Images by Jason Reed / Reuters

This morning the president and First Lady Mrs. O were joined by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero for the 58th US National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. O was dressed in a plum silk dress, paired with a long sleeve top underneath and a thin belt at the waist. This is the same Narciso Rodriguez dress Mrs. O wore to attend the president's address to a joint session of Congress in February 2009. The notable addition for this appearance? Sleeves, of course!

Was this Mrs. O's tongue-in-cheek, sartorial rebuttal to "sleeve-gate"? Or perhaps the first lady simply getting mileage out of her wardrobe? Would love to hear your thoughts on the 2010 remix.

I loved this dress when she wore it to the SOTU in 2009. And I totally understand that she wants to wear it again. However.

Wearing a sweater under a dress is something that works when you are 18, or 20. It's fresh and cute. After 20 or 25, you're in Diane Keaton "kooky" terrotory. Or Madonna. You're just too old to carry it off. Sorry.

This is one of the areas where Michelle O goes off the tracks. (The other is the occasional unfortunate foray into menswear. No.) See, for example, the really nice green shortsleeve jacket worn over the purple striped longleeve top. Or the shower-curtain tunic worn over leggings with a plastic belt and two cardigans last summer in London. This is playful, creative, "original" etc. but you can't do it when you're 45. Or 46.

Classic, glamorous, sexy, romantic, smart, strong -- these are the qualities that MO brings to fashion. But she has to give up what doesn't work any more and focus on the basics.

Thankfully of course, Michelle is the one making decisions about her wardrobe, not you.

However. Mrs. O doesn't *have* to do anything about her fashion choices. Ever. Sorry.

It was a little daring to go for the youngish/amateurish look by putting sleeves under that dress, but she pulled it off. I would never want her to go with the frumpy, older lady jacket over top. That's just too Laura Bush.

I do not think this was a response to sleeve-gate. I think it was Michelle just being practical and getting more mileage out of the dress, but also because it was cold! It looks ridiculous to wear sleeveless or short sleeves when it is freezing outside.

I don't know why she's having a go at me anyway, it's usually Bevi's throat she's after. I mean, I don't mind taking my turn....

Please, she does not discriminate and if there's nothing to be said, she says something anyway. LOL!!

There is nothing "posh" about verbally abusing other posters. I have managed be be more thoughtful about my posts for quite some time now. Why is it still okay for Ms. Tater to do it? BTW, Tater, I didn't understand all of your string of letters, but I do know that it contained profanity. Nice.

Good means Bad, Yes means No, Hello means Goodbye, and Pretending You are the Voice of Reason means You Don't Even Know the Meaning of that Construct!

Sigh.

1. There is no profanity in ROFLMWAO. Unless you're nine and think words for "bottom" are naughty.
2. I missed the bit where you managed to be nice.
3. I didn't verbally abuse another poster.
4. This is not your blog. Don't tell me how to behave here. When Mrs T tells me what she feels is over the line, that's when I start listening.
