Easter Elegance

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza

The first family attended Easter church service today at Allen Chapel AME Church in Washington, DC. Mrs. O rewore an ivory and lime brocade dress by Peter Soronen for the occasion. It was the same dress that first inspired this blog in August 2008!

Also to note, this is the second Easter in a row that the first lady has worn a dress by Peter Soronen. Last year, it was a chic painted lace dress, seen here.

Awww. What a wonderful "full circle" feeling you must have, Mrs T. :-)

It's an elegant picture, but soooo sad that the First Family can't even pray togeher in peace. No wonder they haven't selected a particular church to worship weekly at in DC. The President said already that it causes a commotion whenever they do step out toworship. "But it is SO important, however they get i!!. And GOD only knows they need it!!! With Sadly sometimes the "Spoken and Unspoken RACISM that unforunately still lingers in this great nation of ours, with having the first African American Family grace the White House...but my hat goes off to you Mrs. T. and the "mrs-o.org" website for standing up so proudly to the statement that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said one day that "Perhaps we would be able to live in a nation that would not judge a person by the color of their skin but by their character, instead of their character. You have done JUST THAT Mrs. T. as well as ALL the FLOTUS and our President Barack Obama and First Family of the US.

I had really liked this outfit when i first saw it in that sweet picture with her mother. I'm glad that she's brought it out again.

Simple and elegant. Just like Mrs Obama herself.

This profile view shows just how much Malia looks like her father. I have family that are long-time members of this church -- I'm talking more than 30 years!!! Anyway, my cousin and her mom arrived late so they couldn't get in (not even overflow). They were sick about not getting the opportunity to worship with the First Family. Oh, by the way, my cousin and aunt had to go to another church for Easter Sunday services!

Beautiful picture. Today was the 42nd anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King. I'm sure that was on the Obamas minds today, as well as remembering Jesus' death and resurrection.

Wow.....what a beautiful family!

A family that prays together, stays together!

As Mica said you have now come full circle.........congratulations!

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 3:56 AM | Registered CommenterTsetse Johnson

i have seen a full-length picture of this dress.very beautiful. it looks like Malia belted her cardigan.she is picking up her mom style.how cute!

the last thread was mind-blowing.i mean, some people act like Mrs.O was a lab rat.someone even says that she shouldn't bend while working in the garden with children because they can see the outline of her cleavage and she is the First Lady so it is not appropriate. is there any wonder why women don't progress? or that she should ask her friends before stepping out.how insulting is that? and outfit don't speak to you just say so period.all those wild ideas that people put out about what she should do or shouldn't is very insulting.she has managed her life perfectly without any one of you and spare me the she is now the First lady talk.it is just a cover.

and that dress was not too tight.it is meant to fit that way.if it was tight, she wouldn't have been able to sit.and no one knows how her outfit looks like when she is standing still. it is like people want her to become an inanimated doll. she is not allowed to walk, to bend down,to crouch down... in short, act like a human being.

i don't think anyone of us could live up to that kind of expectations.and i'm happy that she is very confident and very comfortable in her skin.i think i will stop reading comments in the future.some of you come across as very condescending, patronizing and i know that is not your intent but some of you will be best served by rereading their comments before hitting the submit button.end of the rant.

I read the Pool report and the details of their visit are interesting. It's a pity they took the pic while they were worshipping though. They should have been left alone.
Are those the diamond bracelets that I thought she was donating?
That Petr Soronen dress wn't one of my favorites but I remember it from the DNC when they were campaigning.

@ Chrystelle, why are you hashing old arguments on a new thread? We are looking at a beautiful Easter pic, so why comments on a snug dress or white house garden?

Got a litle distracted above, but what a beautiful, normal family. Malia looks pretty in her peach and gold and I see she favors the belted cardigans just like her Mom. Wish I could see more of Sasha's ensemble. They look too cute with their hair all done up for Easter.

Not a fan of brocade and that's why not loving Mrs. O's dress. My personal taste. Those bracelets are too cute. I have similar ones though mine are not diamond, so all I paid was $9.99 for them. I've had them for a while.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 4:43 AM | Unregistered CommenterMrs. A

I love this dress. I understand the designer adjusted it for Michelle by removing the puffy sleeves and putting an extra piece of material around the bust area. Anyone, who owns a copy of Mrs O knows what I mean. The lemony colour is lovely and the detail exquisite. And, I love Malia's skinny belt, she is growing into a lovely young woman.

BTW, Tstete, my mother always said the same thing - The family that prays together, stays together. This picture is simply beautiful. Everyone must have been beside themselves with elation at the First Family stepping into THEIR church. I wish our Queen as Head of the Church of England could be a little more visual in London life. I wish that our politicians could get out and about more and get closer to people. You only see them when an election is coming up. It's really funny but our leaders are dumping their stuffy suits and dressing casual on their campaign trail (the General election is in May) and their wives are getting on the stage, praising and apprasing their husbands, Even the wife of the opposition leader was photograpehed at a soup kitchen last week.

I have no doubt in my mind that this was down to the Obama's and in particular the major role that Michelle played in 2007-2008. THIS is why I love the Obama's so much.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 6:40 AM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

I love this photo, but I can't help but think that it must be hard to pray when there are photographers up in your face. Though maybe it's a telephoto? That would make him a significant distant away. Lovely dress, though, anyway.

For those a bit concerned about the photo ... it was taken by White House photographer Pete Souza and released as the White House Photo of the Day. I shared the initial concern re: privacy, but have to think permission was given for it to be taken and posted on the White House website.

Go first lady, just now read you took your mentees to see the supreme court justices Ginsberg and Sotomayor, great Job. It must have been fun to be around intellect and getting those kids inspired [i see you trying to make them layers ;)] kudos

Loved this outfit first time and second time around

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 10:16 AM | Registered Commenterbriana

Some of you need to calm down, 'sleeves I hope so'-- what will happen if it does not have a sleeve, what happens, the church turns into a pumpkin? Not the best choice for Easter - why? As the preacher man said Sunday, its not your clothes that you need to worship but faith and a heart.

Its like some of you just must force yourself to find something wrong, its not a good day until there is something wrong right.... LOL LOL Silly Season for real

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 10:26 AM | Registered Commenterbriana

Some of you women do not know what to complain about. Its the SPRING TIME and many women including myself do not go to church with DRESSES WITH SLEEVES. No wonder some people stop visiting this website because it has been the same toxic website, about "can" she wear certain clothing items. SMH

Briana, I wish I had a Michelle Obama around when I was growing up. We have no black female role models over here in the UK who mentor children and it's a shame. Michelle is going to impact those girls lives forever. In old age when they are bounching their grandchildren on their knees they will remember this remarkalbe woman and how she strove tirelessly to make a difference in their lives.

The family looks so great in this photo, and Mrs.O looks very elegant and pretty. I see Peter Soronen is an Easter time favorite for her. His designs are so feminine and elegant, I understand why. Her hair cut is just so fab, I wish she had cut it this way sooner. I really like the pretty sparkle of the bangles too. I think I'm going to have to stock up on some cuff's and stackable bracelets soon. They are just so versatile

Boy, it doesn't take much to get some people's hackles up. I was just commenting that it would be more correct, IMO, to cover some skin in church. Not just because it's church, but also, it's probably cool in there, and everyone else has their bodies covered -- you know, with cardigans, and suit jackets, etc. That dress looks rather bare around the neckline as well. You really should dress to be appropriate to the event.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 1:55 PM | Unregistered Commenterpoiret

Just looked at the Easter Egg Roll White House pictures.....the kids look adorable! The FLOTUS should have borrowed Sasha's hot pink espadrilles! How cute would that have looked?

I've been watching the Easter events on White House Live Stream. Sara Barailles was GREAT !!!!

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 3:52 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

@ poiret - Oh come on, you have to know you are talking nonsense, right? Just trying to get a rise out of people, aren't you? I love all of the qualifiers - would be more correct, probably cool, the dress looks bare around the neckline. Either the dress isn't correct, either it is cool in the chruch, and either the neckline is bare - or none of what you wrote is true and you're just being povocative for the heck of it. It's all good, but you should just come out with it and stop trying to be clever.

I shared the initial concern re: privacy, but have to think permission was given for it to be taken and posted on the White House website.

That's not the issue. The issue is respect for the occasion and for the other congregants. I'd hate to be at worship and have photographers snapping pictures, official White House photographer or not.

poiret, when in doubt I say just put on a big ole poncho so as not to offend those easily offended. I long for the days or ankle length bloomers to be honest.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 4:02 PM | Unregistered CommenterThat other Mimi

Hyde Parker I see your point but in all honesty I doubt the White House photographer would have clicked away without the permission of the President or the First Lady. I think it's a glorious picture of a family united in prayer. I was watching some youtube videos around the White House and I zoomed into an area where there were some VERY personal pictures of the First Family and much of them have been taken since January 2009.

Let's be for real, we have seen numerous pictures of the President fawning over his Queen, arms wrapped around her, hugging her and pecking her on the cheek, They are a picture of love. I can't lie. I'm jealous. I'd love to have a fraction of that love in my life right now so it makes me feel good to see others enjoying their blessings.

BTW, I have a picture of my parents wedding in 1966. It takes pride of place on my bedroom wall and showed them both kneeling in prayer shorting after they had taken their vows. They remained happily in love until their passing recently. Everytime I look at that picture, it feels me with love and hope for a future with a husband of my own.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 4:36 PM | Unregistered Commenterjestina

This family picture is one that is precious. Everyone is dressed nicely for the occasion. It is the intense expressions on this face that caught my eye - they all have a burden in their positions, even the children. And yet, they carry this task and responsibility with grace and humility the little girl even looking up hopefully. And with hands folded in prayer, they look earnest on this most joyous of Christian days. As others have said "The family that prays together, stays together". We should all have more of these intense times of reflection and be with our loved ones.

I love this dress! Everything she wears by Peter Soronen is beautiful.

@ Debra Chaffin, Mrs. A, Chris and Hyde Parker...The White House/The Obama Administration wanted this picture taken and released. I think most of you know that!

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 6:05 PM | Registered Commenterann#1

I really like this Peter Soronen dress alot, it looked fabulous the first time she wore it and it looks just as good here. This picture has such a soulfull feel to it. At times it does feel a little voyeuristic, but The President and administration seem to understand the genuine interest and affection that some of us have for them and they are quite accomodating. It seems that recently, with all the nuts coming out of the woodworks as well as the precarious political climate, that we see less photos of them than in the past. Personally, I love the fact that Pete Souza is constantly around to document (so to speak) our President's whereabouts. Anyway........the whole family looks really nice. Those girls are absolutely precious!

This is a great dress.

As to the resurrection of the sleeve issue (gag me) 80% of the bridesmaids' and wedding dresses on the market are sleeveless, and they are worn In church during a sacred ceremony.

Give it up already.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 10:19 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

@Bevi, I'm shocked by all the skin at weddings, couldn't the brides just wear a white snuggie or a horse blanket or something. I long for the middle ages sometimes...sigh.

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 11:10 PM | Unregistered CommenterThatOtherMimi

Someone mentioned it earlier, but I am interested in Mrs. O's beautiful bangles. I thought those were being donated! Are they a duplicate set?

Monday, April 5, 2010 at 11:59 PM | Unregistered Commentercj

Well, you know what, I am actually appalled by strapless wedding dresses worn in church. And I'm pretty liberal as clothing choices go. But if you're going to get married in church, it's a religious ceremony not a ball or a nightclub, so get dressed! And get your damned bridesmaids dressed! Have your rack out for the party if you insist (BARBECUE them if you must) but for heaven's sake get it under cover for the ceremony. Sheesh.

Anyway (!), Mrs O going to church in a sleeveless dress is a completely different issue. She won't have her cleavage hanging out for all to see, she'll be wearing a dress with shoulder straps and a higher neckline - in fact didn't she have this dress altered so that it was higher in the neckline area? I believe the catwalk version was a VERY low scoop neck.

And excuse me, but arms aren't sexual are they? Last time I checked the top shelf I can't say I saw upper arms being the focus of anything much...? Unless I missed a whole section for "bingo wing pornography". Did I? Can the arm fascists point me in the right direction?

@Posh Tater, my girl......"bingo wing porno". When you decide to put your comedy routine on the road, PLEASE put me down for two front row seats at all of the venues on your tour! Girl I am still laughing, where do you come up with these? I love it....BINGO WING PORNOGRAPHY AND ARM FACISTS! HA!
