A Fashion Motto

Perhaps more directly than she ever has before, Mrs. O discussed her style strategy with FabSugar during a recent White House roundtable:

"My motto is I have to feel good in it; I have to wear what I love. I try to be thoughtful about spreading the wealth: young designers. Mixing things up is important to me. But my day-to-day wardrobe choices are very practical. I’m like, what’s the temperature? Am I going to be sitting on the grass? Will I be playing with kids — because I usually want to." As for her shopping habits, Obama admitted, "I don’t buy it if I don’t love it. Everything in my closet is something that I love so that I can make choices based on what makes sense, knowing that I’m going to love whatever it is."

"I don’t want to waste anxiety on something as limited as clothes. I’d rather be anxious over the issue, or worry about the remarks, or think about the veteran that I’m talking to and making sure I’m listening and paying attention; the clothes are just the secondary part or the third part of what is happening over the course of the day." Obama's secret to erasing that anxiety is simple: "If I’m comfortable in what I have on, that’s second nature, and then all my attention can go to the people in the room that I’m with at that time, and I don’t have to worry about whether something is riding up or whether my feet hurt."

Wow! What a down to earth First Lady! Those comments reflect the personality of a true caring, selfless person. She is fashion forward but uses good sense and logic in her wardrobe. Imagine ensuring that every designer (particularly the young up and coming designers) gets a piece of the pie.
What an unforgettable First Lady. Obama 2012!

I love Mrs. O, just love her!! I already loved her, but I love her even more for these comments. It's like she's saying,"yes, I have fun with fashion, but I also know that this is someone's livelihood. So I do 'spread it around' but I also only wear it if I'm comfortable in it. That way, I know I'll feel good, look good and can concentrate on what I'm supposed to be doing that day"

LOVE HER EVEN MORE!!!

Wow! What a great fashion motto to subscribe to. Practical. Personal. And progressive. ...And I've just adopted it as my own. Now it should be much easier to purge my wardrobe of all the clothes I think I might wear one day or have been holding onto for "THAT party" that I've yet to be invited to.

Agree with the above comments. And especially appreciate Mrs. O wanting to be comfortable in her clothes so that they are not a distraction from the listening, engaging and all-around good work that she does!

These are the people we NEED in the White House not that group of snake oil salesmen in the republican lineup.

All I can say is , she is the real deal. Alot of people don't understand her because she is just trying to be herself. Love her and her family....She has the perfect life, because she is satisfied with who she is and where she is in life.

With all the pretense in fashion and what is going on this is what we all need to hear. Be comfortable in everything you wear. Forget aches and pains. Comfort leads to beauty, style, grace and confidence. Love it.

Fantastic! Really puts the whole fashion thing in perfect perspective, doesn't it!?!
People first, issues second, fashion third!

Could do without the negative comment from "Believe it or not". Our country needs less negativity.

As for the fashion philosophy I think it is great. Like to see fashion have this type of realistic place in life.
