Leaving London

Image by Tony Melville / AP Images

... and looking tres chic!

Mrs. O was at Stansted Airport this morning, as the President heads for the G8 Summit in Deauville, France. It's unclear whether the First Lady will be accompanying her husband to France, as media reports have offered conflicting information. We will wait and see!

In the meantime, Mrs. O has given us another delightful ensemble to admire, wearing a purple ombre effect dress and coat, closed at the collar by a vintage pink brooch. Berry hued pumps complete the look.

It's safe to say that the First Lady has been on one incredible sartorial roll while in London.

Update: First Lady Mrs. O wears a Peter Som Fall 2010 dress and custom coat. Peter Som has certainly become one of Mrs. O's preferred designers as of late! The pin is a vintage Henry Schreiner brooch from House of Lavande.

@ trinisamba....I am so thrilled that you would ask this little lady from Seattle about the bag; and I want one too. I have an idea and will post it after checking on it. We have blogged with some
fun ladies on Mrs. O and I so look forward to reading what you all say. I think we all agree that Mrs. O has inspired us to "take it up a notch". I, for one, have always loved beaded and stacked
bracelets so I say, "bring them on", Mrs. O.

Our local paper just reported that FLOTUS is coming on June 13th to our home town for a fund raising luncheon with about 500 other guests. Wouldn't it be exciting to meet her and attend.

With Marine One as a backdrop, in step with that fabulous bag and that man. A blade--that's how sharp she is.

The most amazing dresses and outfits were worn on this trip. Hoping for more international trips!

p.s. Are the dresses and jewelry owned by Mrs. O or are some of the pieces - like the jewelry - on loan?

This outfit is stunning! I think that Mrs. Obama should have worn this to meet the Queen and the Duke of Cambridge. The other outfit would have been great to wear coming off the plane. (pink bolero jacket and satin dress).

On the Obama's last trip to England I saw the same thing happen. Mrs. O wore a fabulous coat and dress on the plane which I thought would have been perfect to meet the Queen and her husband the Prince. This would have avoided the 'Obama Kaflama' about the infamous cardigan.

I just think Mrs. O needs someone to advise her on what to wear and when. She has impeccable taste, but wearing the right outfit at the right time is the next step in her fashion evolution.

Yes, but @Strong Foru, and others, these are your perceptions and considerations, without your really knowing anything about what is going on behind-the-scenes. Easy for you to say what you think is right. Would not be so easy for you, I bet, if you were First Lady with all that entails, of which I'm sure none of us have the benefit of full experience to really know what it's like.

Posh Tater mentioned in another blog thread about how the visit to meet the Queen for lunch was a casual affair, not a formal dressy occasion. Yes, I too think the black skirt and cardigan did not come off that well on that first visit, but I'll bet you it would be kind of nerve-racking for anyone trying to decide what to wear to meet the Queen of England for tea the first time in your life. And that maybe goes for Mrs. O too, no matter how fashion savvy she is -- and again, no one is perfect all the time, every time, and it was not a disaster either. It is all part of Mrs. O's approach to have fun, to feel good, and not sweat it. We are not privy to the background and details upon which her clothes-wearing decisions are made. It seems to me that the dress Mrs. O wore on the first day of this trip to meet the Queen was chosen to blend in with what the Queen was wearing. :)

@flotusrocks....well said. You are right, there is probably more to consider behind the scenes of her clothing choices. You have made think stuff like cost, logistics, availabilty, custom-made pieces, etc. Well said...so easy for some of us just assume, assume, assume. Again well said

Excellent@ flotusrocks, classy as usual. Except that I believe FLOTUS wore a well structured white and black dress on that first visit. She just covered it up with a cardigan. Also, lets remember that the Queen herself was informally dressed. Moreover there was a red carpet affair at the Prime Minister's residence immediately after this meeting with the Queen. Our Michelle just discarded the cardigan and went straight to the PM's residence. Very practical in my humble opinion.I agree that she does seem to go out of her way not to outshine her hosts/ hostesses.

It is May 2011 and I am still amazed that people are still talking about Michelle's attire on her first visit to Buckingham Palace. I can see nothing wrong with what was worn on that visit. There was and apparently still is much ado about nothing. The cardigan that was worn probably cost more than most of us make in one week and I am certain cost more than anything in most of our closets. The entire outfit was well structured and minimalist. Do not be too quick to judge! The English dress quite differently from North Americans and based on The Queen's response to Michelle then and now, she certainly was not offended. So people please let us put the issue or more correctly the non-issue of the black and white dress to rest.
On another note I certainly do not think that Michelle has someone enquiring as to what anyone is wearing so that she can match or blend or harmonise with them. That to me is not Michelle. She is her own woman with a lot of brain and class. That idea is just too tacky.
She has said time and time again that she dresses based on comfort and usually makes her determination to suit the activity and the temperature of the location of the event.
Are you then saying that she is lying on herself or that you do not believe her?
Please let us have fun at this site! I believe that is what Mrs. T wants and so many of us do have fun. As far as I am concerned and I am sure that I speak for many of us who visit here every day "Mrs.O rocks" She is the best thing that has happened to the U.S.A. along with her husband of course.
Keep going FLOTUS. You will be leaving very big shoes to fill. Your beauty, your fashion, your heart and your brain cannot be replicated in any one person.
GO FLOTUS! GO FLOTUS!

For an interesting feature article on Gregory Parkinson, go to today's latimes.com and find the "Image" section.

Included in the article is the information that it was Ikram Goldman, who is stocking Parkinson's clothes, who provided the fuschia/purple leopard print skirt that we've seen in Hawaii ad elsewhere. It's clear that Ikram is still very much involved in Mrs. Obama's clothes selection.

I always have to chuckle when people keep saying she shouldn't of worn this or that to see the Queen. The Queen herself was not offended so why are we? Much ado yet again about absouletely nothing. I believe the Queen loves Mrs O's style.

All bow down and adore our American Queen!!!!!

Sunday, May 29, 2011 at 4:00 PM | Unregistered CommenterThe Cincinnati Kid

Come on, Cinncinatti Kid! I hope you are kidding. No one is going to bow down to ANY president or
his wife in USA. We just don't have or want royalty and I am sure the Obamas don't want it either.
Did you forget about the American Revolution?

Yes, let's have fun here, @trinisamba ;) Far be it from me to criticize anything Mrs. O wears. She knows much better than I do. Maybe it would have been nice to see FLOTUS in something with a bit more color for that casual occasion, but again that's not a criticism, just an observation. There were some fashion observers who questioned the black & white outfit with focus on the cardigan (that's mainly what I was referring to) -- but I do agree it was much ado about nothing (as were all the raised eyebrows and comments over Mrs. O touching Queen E, which obviously in our culture is a sign of deep caring and respect, and the Queen herself realized that, I'm sure, so that's why the Palace nixed any further ado about it. In any case, the Queen responded in kind, because she too seems to be in touch with Mrs. O's beautiful spirit).

The whole purpose of my previous post was to point out to critics on this blog, to think twice. And to question them, "Can you do it better than Mrs. O?" I agree with the essence of the views expressed in your post trinisamba, and that's reflected in my user name! Not sure why you would think anything I said means I think Mrs. O is "lying on herself." Please take it easy. How would any of us know whether or not some information about what the ladies might be wearing during official visits is not shared? Do you know that it is not? I certainly did not say that I thought Mrs. O had anyone inquire about what the Queen would be wearing. Maybe there is no sharing of information. However, when the official invitation is extended, there might be details included about types and/ or general colors of attire the Queen might be wearing for the public events. Can you say absolutely that this is not the case? Do you know for sure everything that goes into Mrs. O's decisionmaking re the outfits she wears?
