Must Read Mrs. O

Writer Joyce Purnick gives her take on the impact of Mrs. Obama's "bare, trim, elegant arms" in a piece for the New York Times:

"The first lady has made it unacceptable for women to appear in public with covered arms. However innocently, however unwittingly, that is what she has done. Those bare, toned, elegant arms of hers have spawned an epidemic of sleevelessness, exposing arms, arms, arms, and not all of them toned and elegant."

"(Psst: We Feel Bad About Our Arms)" [New York Times]

"Michelle Obama's Arms Are Causing a Fashion Riot" [Jezebel]

I find it funny that people complain about her arms. She cannot flaunt her abs or her hips. I am 39 years old and have a similar body structure as her, silky lanky legs (no cellulite), broad lean long arms, luckily a small bum. This is really genetic assisted by good eating habits, running and weights. My tummy bloats and is not flat, yet not flabby, I do not complain when I see women wear hugging bondage dresses or short tops that reveal their tummies. I wear sleeveless dresses or tops, but I also have to wear empire waisted clothes every now and then lest people think I'm pregnant. I see Flotus does the same or wears a belt. I love that she knows her body and dresses to accentuate it.

Women are meant to have tummies and were allowed tummies before the era of the TV camera. Then the voluptuous stars of the film era became passe and the straight-lined and thin (ideal clothes hanger) era began.

Today's women are inundated by advertising that is designed not only to make them feel bad about their bodies but also to criticize and measure themselves against other women--especially the super-gaunt models. It's how the market makes us consume insatiably. And don't think that just because intelligent women understand this that they are immune to it.

People complain about everything and nothing. It is an inspiration for us women to look about us as women- loose weight , keep fit, and flaunt our best assets, whatever that may be, High five to FLOTUS
