Easter Sunday in Prabal Gurung

The Obamas walked through Lafayette Park to St. John's Episcopal Church for Easter service in Washington, DC today. For the occasion, Mrs. O wore a Prabal Gurung charcoal brush painted rose silk twill gazar dress and coat from the designer's Spring 2010 collection. The first lady has previously worn the dress here and here, but this was a debut appearance for the stunning coat to match!

I thought the dress was so-so when she wore it on a couple occasions but with that coat, it is spectacular and beyond. Take at look at this CBS video to see how it just flows http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50143929n The girls look lovely too, they walk just like their Dad. Yes, I am gushing, I just love them all.

Terrific looking family. So proud of our country at times like these.

A perfect Easter look! The coat is so pretty -- I can't imagine how our Mrs. O could have kept that at the back of the closet for three years. The girls are lovely, as always, and I like the President's light gray suit. It's good to see him in a blue shirt for a change.

That dress is sick; not sure how I feel about the coat yet.

I agree, lady watcher. I always thought the dress, by itself, was missing something. I absolutely love the matching coat. Beautiful family.

What a marvelous woman Mrs Obama is. She's done such a phenomenal job of raising those girls especially under the harsh and unforgiving spotlight that's squarely focused on them. And she's done it all while still being and looking effortlessly glorious! What a remarkable woman and what an absolutely lovely family!

Is it normal for an almost 16 yr old to hold her mother"s hand while walking? To me this is staged for the press. I think the girls are lovely but why Malia is always holding her mother"s hand seems quite odd to me. She is too old to be doing this. Almost sixteen yrs old and holding onto your mom"s hand? I don"t think so!

The President looks very handsome in his grey suit - a color not seen before on him. Mrs. Obamas's ensemble is very lovely but not what I what expect to be worn to an early church service. It seems appropriate for a garden party or wedding.

Any idea of what the Obama girls are wearing? I have a 14 year old that follows their fashions too.

I would love to know where Malia's dress is from. Does anyone know?

the coat makes the outfit, and her shoes, too.

Malia is wearing Carmen Marc Valvo

I completely agree with you MI Mom! What a beautiful coat! Everyone looks so nice; Sasha is truly a standout in these pictures as well! So cute! As Vanessa Williams sang so well, our Michelle seemed to "save the best for last(er)"! lol

The dress is okay, but the coat is very elegant looking. It was just right for what looked like a dreary March weather in DC.

Monday, April 1, 2013 at 8:44 PM | Registered Commenterlissa

@Lou, I disagree. For one, Malia is only 14-years-old not 16. And i'm 15, will be 16 in June, and still hold my mother's hand, say "I love you" in public, and give her hugs and kisses with people around. I think it just depends on the person and their comfort regarding public affection and the situation. It probably doesn't bother Malia, just like it doesn't bother me.

On the style front, WOW! What an amazing looking family :) I love each of the Obama's outfits... so stylish! I've noticed that they have stopped color cordinating so much but still manage to look fabulous. I love the rare times during the year when we see the whole family together! Not only because I love them so much but I love to see what they are wearing :)

And, is it me or has Sasha had a growth spurt?

Monday, April 1, 2013 at 10:23 PM | Unregistered CommenterEmmebelle

I think it's lovely that Malia is holding her mom's hand which always seems to be the case when they're all together with Sasha holding onto her Dad. As for it being "staged," I think not for the same reason that was mentioned, earlier. An "almost" 16 year old? I thought she was 14 going on 15 in July and I don't think it odd for someone that age to hold onto a parent's hand--especially under the harsh and constant glare of the public. There could also be some self-consciousness associated with that and the parents provide security. I think it's endearing.

@Lou, Chelsea Clinton is over 30 years old and still holds her mother's hand whenever they are out together in public. Jenna's twin Barbara Bush also always held her mother Laura's hands too and she was already well over 16 when they lived in the White House.
Stop with the silly nitpicking and conspiracy theories about a perfectly lovely family and the enviable and heartwarming closeness and displays of affection between well-raised children and the remarkable woman who birth and raised them so beautifully.

@ Audrey,
Conspiracy theories??? Get a grip! My comment about a sixteen year old holding her mother's hand is hardly a "conspiracy" or" nit picking" either.
Every one is entitled to their own opinion and I hold firm that it looks odd.

I have a picture from my wedding of me and my mom holding hands. We were walking away and not aware of any photographer. I will always treasure it because it shows how close we felt on that day. (I was 42 by the way.) Oh, and I love the coat. What a surprise to hold back the most special piece of the outfit!

Lou: You are always hating - why come to this site?

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 9:51 AM | Unregistered Commentermarlene

For a change, it was MR. O that first caught my eye here. He is rockin' that gray suit!. All three ladies look fab, as usual. As far as the hand holding, it certainly needs no justification, but I think a big reason might be that the girls always have photographers right in their face, and maybe their parents take their hands to ease the discomfort.

Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 11:05 AM | Registered Commenterbabs

@Lou: I'm 45 years old, and I still proudly hold my mother's hand when we're out. It's a genuine show of affection. My mom would hold her mother's hand when they were out, and did so until my grandmother passed. I'd give anything to be able to hold my grandmother's hands right now. It's sad that you choose to see a show of affection as something "staged" or "fake."

The family looks wonderful. Hand holding provides security in the face of intrusive photographers and the public eye. Gee, wouldn't we all feel better if we had someone's hand to hold!?

Rose design is โ€œsoโ€ spring inspired. Although the print is large, Mrs. O makes this coat look so dainty and sweet. Great choice and reflects her personality, beautiful inside and out. I think itโ€™s great to wear fashion with stunning details on the back especially when pictures are being taken so often. The coat definitely completes this dress.

@Lou you wrote:

And you wonder why you're accused of conspiracy theories and nitpicking?
When a teen in our midst has more humanity, is smarter, more instructive and perceptive than you Lou, it's good reason to be very ashamed of yourself and your horrid, nasty, gossipy, sour, negative, vile behavior.
Nitpicking a perfectly lovely 14 year old - a minor - just because you disagree politically with her father? Really Lou?!
Shame on you!
You're pathetic and a bully Lou, but you might try picking on someone your own age. Leave the kids alone!

The pattern on the dress and coat is absolutely perfect for this time of year - a dark floral to herald the end of winter and start of spring. This outfit was a great choice and so flattering on Mrs. O.

I also think the girls are dressed so nicely for the occasion - beautiful, age appropriate outfits all around.

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 9:26 AM | Registered CommenterBB

Do you know how many parents wish their teenagers still want to hold their hand? For those who have been watching all of these years, we know that the hand holding and love are real and are grateful for the witness of this family to the nation and the world. AND I love the dress and coat; Mrs.Obama has provoked me to the sin of covetousness. I especially love the hem detail!

@ Audrey
Wow! So many adjectives to describe me! Can you spew any more venom, Audrey?
Do you always react like this when someone does not share your opinion?I suggest you grab yourself a big cup of decaf coffee and chill.
And BTW, I contributed to Obama"s comapaign and voted for him. So your presumptuous comment about me not agreeing with Obamas politices was entirely wrong. And I will never return to this blog (this should make you very happy!) so save yourself the trouble of posting anything that I will never read.

Hello Lou . . . Malia is 14 years old. I am 60+ but I so wish I could hold my father's hand, arm, face just one more time again. Malia and the Obama family look fabulous holding hands together as they walk to church! There is no age limit on hand holding.

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 3:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterAuntie Mom

I wish I'd grown up in a family where I could have felt comfortable holding my mom's (or my dad's) hand. I find it comforting to see images of a family that physically expresses their affection for each other, and find their opponents' disgusting remarks about the First Family's affectionate regard for each other an indicator of how uncomfortable the FF's opponents are with normal, happy, family relationships, as they are presented by what the opponents regard as usurpers in the White House. Hell mend 'em. And love the Easter outfits. I remember as a child how much fun it was to get a new Easter outfit (to be worn until you grew out of it!), but fun none the less.

refuse to indulge the madness of "hand holding"......really? Have we come to this, yet again? Anyway.........
Who says that FLOTUS does not shop her own closet? Where has she kept this secret weapon of a coat? This is simply divine!
The entire family looks so stylish and chic. My standout has to be my President! That man, that man, that man! HAVE MERCY!
Yes, my fellow Mrs. O friends.......I am back! I have missed you all soooo much, We'll play catch-up in the chat room, I promise.

Every time I look at Sasha's dress I say WOW! It is really beautiful and so is she. I think she is going to be the Serena Williams of the two sisters! The one who is really going to flourish in the public eye. That's not to say that Malia won't be a person of note, too. But I suspect it will be in a quieter way.
