Boston Strong

The First Lady accompanied the President to Boston this week in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings. For the somber occasion, Mrs. O wore a blue dress and coat, presumably both by Narciso Rodriguez. Mrs. O has worn the Narciso Rodriguez coat a few times before, first in May 2011, here. I believe this is the first time we have seen the dress to match. A belt at the waist and pin at the shoulder completed the look.

Such a somber occasion, but as always, appropriately dressed. I am sure the First Couple were a source of comfort for the families of the victims.

Honoring the occasion.

The First Lady is perfect in this blue outfit. Is the flower pin a red poppy?

Totally agree Kywstgal.
I'm loving the coat and dress ensembles Mrs. O has been wearing lately.

wonderful coat, dress and belt. I don't care for the pin - and I feel so petty for posting that given the occasion even though this is a fashion blog and all. hopefully Michelle never has to choose an outfit for such a sad event again.

It seemed for a while we were over the bangs, but they are back and too long and too heavy and just such a mistake.

Elegantly sophisticated and classic. I agree BB about that particular pin . . . another selection (larger) I would have loved. The ensemble was very nice (w/shrug) when she took the coat off while visiting patients at the hospital as well.

She always looks so fresh, her look so effortless. How does she do it?

A lovely, subdued look. @BB, I know what you mean and hope, as you do, that Mrs. O will never have to attend an event like this again.

I am impressed with how the first lady works and extends her wardrobe over many years and occasions. We are seeing some coat and dress ensembles now that she previously wore as separates. I recall a similar thing with the white rose pattern coat and dress. I am sorry she had to debut such a classy ensemble on such a sad occasion. She and the President brought comfort to all of America.

I love the coat so much better with this dress than the purple dress that she wore it with before. This is a nice look. I am sure most folks would have worn traditional mourning colors but Mrs O dances to the beat of her own drummer. ;0)

This outfit strikes that right balance of being strong, yet tender. I hate seeing the anguish on everyone's faces, just gut wrenching!

Sorry for the double post.

As A Boston resident who was at the race and then on lockdown on Friday, I really appreciated the President and First Lady being here. The speech was so wonderful and they were a great source of solace and unity. POTUS's speech is being used in clips on all the pop music stations here. They are so wonderful! On the fashion front, a nice choice by Mrs. Obama, particularly as the Boston Marathon's colors this year were blue and yellow.

I think the blue color choice is excellent. Sober enough to honor the lives and memories of the dead and injured, yet a compelling message for Boston and the Boston Marathon tradition that life and community will continue. Amen.

I noticed a couple of not so enthusiastic comments here about Mrs O's brooch - it looks like a poppy, commonly worn for the remembrance of those who died for their country. Perhaps it was, as always, a thoughtful choice.

To me, the pin resembles a Gerbera flower. From my “Google” search, I gleaned the following with regard to the flower and the color of the outfit Mrs. O chose to wear:

“The meanings of gerbera flowers stem from those attributed to the general daisy family. These meanings include innocence and purity. The gerbera variety holds an added meaning of cheerfulness.”

“A red flower represents the essence of emotions such as love and passion. It is also a symbol of courage, determination, admiration, consistency, and respect.”

“Blue is often the color associated with hope.”

On closer inspection and from the pictures where she's seen visiting with victims and has taken her coat off, it's obvious that that's not a belt but some sort of fixed leather trim on the dress.
