Mother's Day Cheer

Yellow was the color du jour at the Mother's Day Joining Forces event held in the State Dining Room of the White House yesterday. The First Lady and Dr. Biden met with children from military families as they created Mother's Day cards and other crafts. Both women donned yellow, as Mrs. O re-wore a Rachel Roy frock, previously seen here.

Festivities continued beyond the White House. Joined by spouses of members of Congress, the ladies later gathered at the Naval Observatory to assemble Mother's Day packages that deployed US troops have requested to be sent to their mothers and wives at home. For her more casual look, Mrs. O wore a Sonia By Sonia Rykiel knit top and cardigan. A banner day for Joining Forces!

P.S. The pup below is the Biden family dog, Champ.

Let's Move Tour 2012

The First Lady was in Des Moines, Iowa yesterday to host a "Let's Move!" event for children from Iowa schools. Perhaps a nod to the upcoming holiday, Mrs. O wore a sold-out Sonia by Sonia Rykiel heart intarsia sweater, last seen in December 2011. (For those interested, similar sweaters are available here and here.)

From Iowa, Mrs. O was off to Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville, Arkansas for a "Let's Move!" event to highlight the military's effort to improve the nutritional quality of food they serve. On the style front, Mrs. O opted for an understated grey pantsuit, adorned with a red paper airplane pin.

Veterans Day Chic

Photos by Chip Somodevilla and Harry How / Getty Images

Mrs. O marked Veterans Day by attending a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband. From there, the President and First Lady were off to San Diego, CA, where they attended the NCAA men's college basketball Carrier Classic between the Michigan State Spartans and the North Carolina Tar Heels aboard the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson.

On the style front, Mrs. O began the day in a very ladylike but appropriately somber grey lace skirt and coordinating coat, anchored by black knee high boots and a black turtleneck. A statement necklace completed the look. This coat, some may recall, was worn in January 2010 for the funeral of Jean Biden, here. The designer remains unknown (to me at least). In San Diego, the attire was more casual. The First Lady paired a striped top with black pants and patent leather oxfords.

Update: In the first photo above, First Lady Michelle Obama wears a Miriam Haskell statement necklace of European filigrees, glass pearls, and Swarovski crystals. For those curious about Mrs. O's heart and stripe sweater, it appears to be the Heart intarsia striped wool sweater from Sonia by Sonia Rykiel, available here
