A Lovely Little Pin

Official White House Photo by Pete Souza

Photo by Marte Garmann Johnsen / Office of the Prime Minister, Norway

Our friends at W Magazine have shared a fabulous new detail. The pave diamond flower pin that the first lady wore for her interview with Oprah, and also in Oslo, Norway, is a custom piece by the Italian-based jewelry company Garavelli. The pin was purchased by the president as an anniversary gift for Mrs. O, secured from their favorite Chicago jeweler. Lovely!

This is such a lovely pin and a gift from an appreciative husband. This pin also was worn when our Michelle was interviewed by Barbara Walters and named Most Fascinating Person of the Year! She surely lets POTUS know how much it means to her and fightfully so. BEAUTIFUL!

I'm sorry about the typo...it should read "rightfully" so.

I like the pin too.

I like Michelle's versatility. She always manages to mix and match and make full use of her wardrobe and jewellry, it would never cross my mind to throw a brooch onto a string of pearls but it works beautifully here.

The Os' wedding anniversary is October 3. If it was a gift this year, here's how they celebrated, courtesy of Lynn Sweet. http://www.politicsdaily.com/2009/10/06/the-obama-wedding-anniversary-the-date-night/

I love that Mrs. O wears pins. I have a vintage collection and I've gotten them out and am wearing them. I haven't tried belts yet, though...

I am wearing pins more, to salute our first lady's beautiful style.

Am going to drop a large hint to my lovely husband that a diamond flower pin would make a fantastic anniversary gift for me. Mrs. T - you're about to get a new visitor to your site (if only for inspiration)!

I love that she's wearing it so much since their anniversary. It is a beautiful piece of jewelry and very thoughtful of him to get it custom made. I believe he got her a custom made necklace for her b-day or their anniversary in '08 during the campaign. I can't for the life of me remember where I read this. From what I recall, it was a 3 strand necklace with the word "HOPE" and then also the Obama campaign sign and another symbol...I think a peace sign in diamonds.

IVA, I know exactly what necklace you are talking about. She was wearing it alot earlier this year, especially with her casual clothes.

Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 10:39 PM | Registered CommenterNyon

Iva--

Part of it may have come from a recent article somewhere about a staff member for Michelle who spoke about sometimes being a go-between for the Obamas during the campaign and cited as an example a silver necklace for her birthday that he had commissioned (maybe designed) and she apparently did some of the legwork for it.

You may have read it elsewhere also because that article did not describe it. I remember seeing her wear it while campaigning and did read near the end that she said she would wear it until election day. Its origin gives it considerable more significance.

Wonder how much of that "nice stuff" she gets from him is jewelry. During one campaign stop he visited a touristy type of shop and was pictured holding up and carefully studying a couple of necklaces being considered as a gift for Michelle.

It was so sweet that POTUS took such pride in his gift giving.

He indeed "knows his girl"!

I love Mrs. Obama's up-do. This is very flattering to her strong face structure and graceful neck. In these pictures I can really see the resemblance to her mother who I think is not only lovely looking but gets yourself in very classy and age-appropriate ways.

So much for my Chanel pin theory! It will be so fun to see how she incorporates this special piece of jewelry into her life. I hope she wears it often; I'll be surprised if she doesn't.

Mrs. T - thanks for posting the link to W. In addition to the blurb about the pin, there was a short interview with Mrs. O's hairdresser. I thought it was so interesting that he said the two of them really did not discuss what he was going to do with her hair when they meet before a particular event. Apparently she just gets in the chair and "chills" (his description) while he decides what to do and then does it. He also mentioned that she is booked months in advance for these appointments (and presumably others regarding wardrobe), and her schedule is jammed. I'm glad she has the life she does, and I get to watch it, but I sure would not trade mine for hers. I'll take my privacy and the option for quiet and solitude any day.

I keep thinking about her remarking in the Oprah interview how they loved Camp David because they can be "free" there. Their lives are so proscribed most of the time.

I'm snowed in at home in DC and I was just revisiting various Mrs. O looks. I realized you can pretty much tell how fabulous or controversial an outfit was just by the sheer number of comments. The traditional plain-janish outfits barely register any comments. That maybe what happened with the Hanukkah outfit: it looks very traditionally first ladyish. I love when Mrs. O adds her own stamp to an outfit and gets it right!

Hi Georgia, That is a Thakoon dress that Mrs. O wore in Strasbourg, France. It was covered on he blog here, if you would like more detail: http://mrs-o.org/newdata/2009/4/3/leading-ladies.html

Hi Mrs T

Arnold Scaasi, in referring to Michelle Obama in the Harper Bazaar article, stated "She's good-looking and has a very good presence, and she photographs well...In her Isabel Toledo evening pajamas at a fundraiser last summer, she looked very glam and chic - which is not a word you usually use for first ladies..."

Do not recall seeing that "evening pajamas" outfit. Was it also covered here?

Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 9:58 PM | Registered CommenterJazz

Hi Jazz, The look is covered in the Mrs. O book, but not on the site (it predated the blog in June 2008). Here is the outfit, accessorized with a Tom Binns necklace: http://www.harpersbazaar.co.uk/Fashion/Michelle-Obama-in-Tom-Binns-necklace/gallery

Thanks Mrs T

Had seen that photo before and loved the outfit but did not think of it as the possible "evening pajamas" Really enjoy this site - almost addictive. Appreciate all your work. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas

That is a fabulously pretty flower and it's very nice to know where it came from and why. A very romantic choice. I guess it's the rose that will never fade - and then some!

Julie, the suit you linked to is Maria Pinto. Mrs. O actually had the same suit cut in a few fabrics that she wore throughout 2007 and 2008.

I am desperate for Mrs. O news, so have taken to clicking back and back over the last couple of months to get a little "fix" to last me until the White House lifts the ban on new pictures.

Which brings me to November 23, and that stunning grey Moschino dress she wore - the one with the diagonal bands of fabric. She wore a small pin on that dress. Is it this anniversary pin?

This got lost at the end of another thread. Here is the only photo I've seen of the back of her hair:

Oh thank goodness. Thank you Sierra. Mrs O doesn't know what she does to us Mrs O stalkers when we don't get our daily fix of her attire. She looks simply stunning and the ever present smile as always is there. Glad to see this and can't wait for the New Year.

P.S. I mean stalking in only the most innocent sense. I'm not nuts, really I'm not. Stop looking at me that way....

Mrs.T, there are new pics of the first lady on the white house flickr account including the pic of the green dress most people were talking about.i think it is the jason wu dress she wore at the kennedy center.

Scaasi's comment is a little odd. There's no way that outfit is pyjama's, evening or not. They are palazzo pants and a tunic. Stra-a-ange.

It is so refreshing to have a NEW fashion icon like Mrs. Obama in the White House! Her style is stunning, innovating and very elegant. The choice of her jewelry is fashionable and gives new directions for many of us. I just love everything about this new wonderful couple and wish them all the best for 2010.
