Lovely Ladies

Image by Jason Reed / Reuters

Prior to the Cinco de Mayo festivities, the First Lady Mrs. O and Dr. B joined the president for the signing of the Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act -- a bill that will provide for soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and their families.

For the signing, Mrs. O and Dr. B each turned to their own take on professional dress. The first lady chose a Zero + Maria Cornejo geometric print dress (first seen last summer in Pittsburgh), paired with a black patent leather belt, drop earrings and open toe heels. Dr. B wore a pale blue skirt suit with a slight ruffle at the sleeve, paired with pearls earrings, a beaded necklace and netural heels.

Lovely Ladies, indeed!

YIKES! the belts are back in town...why must Flotus wear them--with her short waist they just sit right under her bust---not a good fashion look....

I ike how FLOTUS and SLOTUS don't wear hose with their professional attire

Love the First Lady's dress. Very 'professional with a twist' and cute. Dr Biden looks nice but I think the skirt is a tad bit short... though she's petite enough to get away with it.

The Belt is Back!

Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 10:43 PM | Unregistered CommenterNora

No, no, no. Not at all becoming of Mrs. O and not befitting her style. This is Old Lady-esque with a little pot belly . . . which she doesn't have. Stop with the belt under the bosoms.

MO looks great here -- pretty and polished for an official occasion. I love this dress on her, liked it the first time. I usually like Dr B's looks, but here she looks meh -- skirt too short, jacket is shapeless, she looks washed out & her hair could be better styled....this is a real boring Washington look.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 12:17 AM | Unregistered Commenternonpasserat

I love her belt, it give the dress definition! I don't like the material of Jill's suit.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 12:20 AM | Registered CommenterM.M.

Yes, this is one of those photographic moments that is not flattering to either lady. The Michellester has that closed mouth, clenched smile that is not her best look, but she is caught in the look a lot.
I agree that the length of Dr. B's skirt isn't right...tooo short, after all, she is not a 30 something.
A while back someone asked what her routine is to keep in shape. I remember an article in Vogue before the election....Dr. B. runs 5 miles a day. Bless her heart and dedication.

Agree Gail, the skirt is too short on Dr B. Hey can any of you young ones out there tell me about the lack of nylons ? I know it is current and wearing nylons makes us old but my legs don't look like they used to. Plus with certain shoes, my feet hurt if I don't wear some kind of foot covering.

The deep v gives her the definition she needs that makes this belt work. She has that ideal hourglass shape. Loved this dress the first time I saw it.

Dr. Biden continues to impress.

Hooray to the end of hose! We're free!!!

I love bold prints and I can see myself in this so this dress is a winner for me. The belt compliments the dress beautifully, it works here. Love the swept back hair and cute earrings. I'm thinking that a neck chain would have pulled the look together nicely.

I remember both outfits from the campaigning days and I love them both. I heard that Mrs Biden runs 5 miles FIVE TIMES A WEEK. Looking at those legs, it certainly shows.

Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden both look classy in this photo! I really like this belted look on Mrs. Obama who is wearing two of my favorite colors, black and white. Though the wide belted look wouldn't work too well for me, since she's tall and is not 'short-waisted' it looks great on her! Mrs. Obama is a shapely woman with hips. Any woman without sufficient hips, would look like a crayon wrapped in a wide paper crayola sleeve.

Mrs.T can you do something against Wanda? if she can't be respectful towards the first lady, she doesn't belong on your site. and the way she write the first lady's name is beyond condescending. there are many site where that kind of disrecpect is authorised but hopefully not on your site.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 8:52 AM | Registered Commenterchrystelle

@Wanda, her name is Michelle Obama... I know it must be hard for your heart that she is first lady right? It bothers you but eat your heart out.. She is first lady and there is nothing you can do about it... Nada Nada and millions of women of shades around the globe love her whether she is wearing this or that, EAT YOUR HEART OUT while you name call. She still is FIRST LADY

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 9:15 AM | Registered Commenterbriana

FLOTUS is, in fact, short-waisted---which is NOT a character defect, just a fact of her unique body shape---why must some people think that that any even slight criticism of Mrs O's fashion sense is a criticism of her worth as a person (it is not!!!). Any way, I will go to my grave wishing she'd give up the belts!

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 9:59 AM | Unregistered Commenterann50

Since when is a lady OVER THE HILL when she gets to the age of 30. Get over yourself. Both ladies have legs to die for and you know it. They are an inspiration to all women over 30, 40 & 50. They are smart, intelligent, beautiful women who clearly take care of their bodies, some women UNDER the age of 30 can only dream of achieiving the same.

So, take your hate to another site where you can compare and contrast your spiteful remarks and high five each other in peace.

Gosh, I usually ignore the haters, but sometimes I just have to say something. Ugh !!!!!

When I first saw this dress on our Michelle last year, I was on the fence because the colors looked a bit muted. Then there was a picture with better lighting and you could see the pattern in the dress and it's quite interesting. I liked it then and still do. I'm a fan of her belts and the ways that she wears them. To me, the belt being worn here is no different than if the dress was an empire waist dress with a contrasting peice of fabric that's placed there. Last year there was a sharp dress on Lord and Taylor's website (I think BCBG Max Azria or Cynthia Steffe) that had a patent leather waistband on it's empire dress.
Both FLOTUS and SLOTUS look reallly nice. That blue really brings out Jill's eyes. I think it's a matter of opinion whether Dr. Biden's skirt is too short or not. She has great legs and if mine look 1/2 that good at her age, these knee caps will be on display for all four seasons of the year! Kudos to both of these magnificent women!

I like this look even better this time around. The slimmer belt makes an impact.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 12:40 PM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

I think Jill Biden is a hot mamma. Look at those legs. And Michelle and her were in a heel competition Ms. Biden would win this round.

Michelle looks stunning as usual. I just hate when photographers captures her "muppet" moment face.

Not sure how I feel about the stockings issue. I feel like it's ok in the summer if one is wearing sandals, but other than that....

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 2:22 PM | Unregistered CommenterLisa Hemphill

MRS OBAMA WEAR THE SAME DRESS LAST YEAR IN THE SUMMER WITH CLOSED BLACK SHOES HER HAIR WAS OUT AND HER BELT AND EARRINGS. THIS TIME SHE HAD A OPEN TO SHOES HER HAIIR WAS NOT DONE AND DREFFERENT BELT AND EARRING SHE STILL LOOKED GOOD.

Shelly:

I posted a fun article about women wearing pantyhose on the chat board.

Wanda:

Why come onto a blog and make snide references to Mrs. Obama?. If you don't like her, take your asinine comments to a board that would really appreciate what you have to say. Can anyone say “teabagger”?

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 4:27 PM | Registered Commenterjerseygirl

These two ladies always look so darn cute together. Do they both have great cheekbones or what? While Mrs. O.'s dress is not among my favorites, it would have looked a lot better without that blasted under-bust belt. Dr. Biden's light blue outfit and necklace must have looked fabulous with her eyes, and I really like the texture of the fabric used in the suit.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 6:32 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Love M's hair and earrings. Dr. B is a pretty woman and dresses nicely.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 6:33 PM | Unregistered CommenterSusan

And yes, I would venture to say that Dr. Biden's suit skirt is also a tad too short. Knees are not our most attractive feature, especially as we get older.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 6:50 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

I agree with Shelley. Women 60 yrs and older do not have good knees. Dr. B is petite, lovely and well dressed but for this type of event she should have worn stockings.

Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 8:13 PM | Unregistered CommenterRita

I wonder if the differing opinions about the pantyhose is a geographical thing (as well as an age thing) i've lived in the southwest and very few women wear hose anymore. It's a problem for me because I don't tan, and have blindingly white legs, but if mine looked like Dr. Jill's, knees and all, I wouldn't wear hose either. I think her suit looks great. I think Mrs. O looks a lot better with the belts lower, or missing. But other than that she looks great.

Re - with our without pantyhose. IMO treat this as you would any other fashion choices. What’s comfortable for “you” Stick to your motto, I will only wear what I feel comfortable and confident wearing. Nothing has changed, whether it’s mini skirts or spandex tights we will decide whats best for “us” One fashion show I watched actually mentioned a good idea, if women have large thighs, they should get one size larger so pants or skirts fits more loosely in those areas…..and t-shirts etc., should not be above the bum, when wearing leggings.(smile)

Mrs. O makes fashion magnifico, stupendo. Sleeve length is perfect for her, would like to see her in more styles with that sleeve design. Dr. Biden’s baby blue suit colour is actually one of my favourite fashion colours and her necklace blends in very well.

I just have to say that, personally, I don't feel that Wanda has been disrespectful or hateful. This is a blog about the fashion of the First Lady. It's okay to not like what she is wearing. It's not political. True be told, I find the FLOTUS reference disrespectful.

Friday, May 7, 2010 at 10:03 AM | Unregistered CommenterLisa Hemphill

Those who cannot wear short skirts nitpick on those who CAN. Dr. Biden looks great! I thumb my nose up at convention and rules, wear what makes you happy!

Friday, May 7, 2010 at 10:42 AM | Unregistered CommenterThat other Mimi

I totally agree with you, Lisa Hemphill. I do not care for the FLOTUS or POTUS references. That's why I always say Mrs. O. or Mr. President. I don't think we know her well enough to call her Michelle, either. Except for the other Michelle, of course. LOL!

Friday, May 7, 2010 at 7:05 PM | Unregistered CommenterChristen

Wow!

If you guys can pick on Jill Biden's knees then you guys must have the knees of GODDESSES! Seriously! Jill Biden looks GREAT. Her legs look really pretty! Shapely, petite, cute! And don't we think it is great that at 60 she looks like that, instead of looking like she has one foot in the grave, waiting for death? I am always looking for women who inspire me to look forward to getting older instead of dressing and acting like aging means that all the fun is gone!

I like the belts and agree to disagree with anyone who doesn't. There is so much that MOST of us agree on when it comes to the uber fab-ness that is Michelle, that hey, we can let the belt thing go. Some like, some don't like! It keeps things interesting.

We are a lucky nation to have these two lovely leading ladies!

Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 4:02 PM | Unregistered Commentero'Coutoure

I really like the print of Mrs. O's dress, but the belt does give her the illusion of having a pouchy stomach. Mrs. Biden's skirt is entirely too short for her age and the hair needs to be cut and styled more age-appropriately. And finally, what's up with all the bare legs? I can understand it from time-to-time, particularly as the weather heats up, but it has really become a bit too much. In my opinion, it makes them look a bit undressed. On the bright side, I am glad to see Mrs. O kicking the heels. Do you think she's been reading my posts about the lack of heels:)!!!

This is my first post. I really love this blog.

What does FLOTUS mean?

I think Dr. B takes the prize here? Who makes her suit?

Hi, Nice to see Dr. B looking so great. I'm 54 and, its hard to find fashion role models.
I don't get the hateful comment reference. I tried to look back but I don't see names for some reason. (and I'm a liberal who loves Obama so you'd think I would notice).

Flotus= First Lady of the U.S. Potus= President of the U.S.

Mrs. Biden is very pretty and dresses nicely. She is a cool and accomplished woman. Mirs. O is a more advenuturous dresser. I like both of these women and would like to have either set of their legs as my own.
Mrs. O's dress for Cinco de Mayo was a bit short but I loved it. She is toned and classy looking.

I really like these ladies. How often do you get to good looking, relatable (spelling?), smart and fashionable women as the wives of the president and vice president?

Let's appreciate them while it lasts! :-D
