An Oldie But Goodie

Michelle Obama Gator Chomps

Image used with kind permission from Flickr user The Big Reveal

This time last year Mrs. O was hard at work on the campaign trail, traveling the country in support of her husband's campaign. The photo above captures our future first lady at a University of Florida rally, embracing school spirit with the Gator chomp. How quickly time has flown by!

Well, we thought of this image specifically, because it was just last week that Mrs. O wore a similarly printed jacket and skirt from Moschino in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. And indeed, the patterned floral skirt above is Moschino too.

A bit of fun until Mrs. O's next appearance!

Too funny! Having married into a Gator family, I know all about the chomp.

You put your elbows & palms together to start the chomp. Then, simultaneously moving straight up & down at the knees & turning to the side, you chant (in strong Southern accent) at each stage of the movement "Go (chomp. bend up and down.). Gators (chomp. bend. turn left or right). Go (open your chomp. turn to opposite side.). Gators (close chomp. straighten up.)" Then you sort of clap your hands & cheer & do that feet kicking bottom slow run cheerleadery move.

Got it? All together now....

There was also a great photo of the whole O family taken in Pueblo, CO, the last weekend of the campaign. Mrs. O was wearing lilac jeans and a coordinated top and sweater. Would love to see that one again, too.

It was just about this time last year with the polls all over the place and talk about the Bradley effect circulating that I got a knot in my stomach and started ticking oft the days to the election. All that fear dissolved the moment the Os strode onto the open air stage in Chicago on election night. I loved Mrs. O's Rodriguez dress and the matching dresses of the two girls and the red tie of the President-elect. What a great moment that was!

Ha ha! The Chomp. Too cute! Thanks for giving some insight into the steps behind it desertwind.

@ Nakajima
I also remember the news circulating all that garbage about the Bradley effect during the last few days before Election Night. And I remember the day before election night when Jon Stewart used his interview with then Senator Obama as an opportunity to poke some fun at it by asking Obama if the "Bradley effect" would suddenly take him over and his white side would not allow him to vote for himself on election day. Then Obama jokingly said "Yeah, I won't know what to do". Too funny.

When I saw the family walk out together, coordinated in black and red my whole family and I became so emotional. It was a moment I will never forget. And as for Mrs.O's dress, when I first saw it I thought it was great. But for some reason it got this visceral reaction from the media the next day. People seriously need to lighten up a bit. They were a beautiful picture regardless of what she was wearing.

Newsweek also recently did a profile on Kristen Jarvis, Mrs.Obama's body woman and special assistant. It's quite an interesting read and even gives a little more insight into the behind the scenes moments of election night. You can check out the article here

@ Nakajima and Ari
I don't know what it says about us but I thought that that red and black Rodriguez dress Mrs. O wore on election night was absolutely stunning. I was speechless the next morning when she was pilloried for it in the press and fashion world.

It is the one dress I would buy if I could have afforded it.

Perhaps it was the lighting for the time of day, dunno. Whatever the reason, it was at that moment that I knew we were in for 4 years of extreme reactions on all sides about every thing she wears. I am loving it all and believe me I don't think that Ikram is telling Mrs O what to wear, I suspect that Mrs. O tells her what she wants and Ms. Goldman complies.

Denisegril & Ari we are here >>>>><<<<<<

I'm in London and stayed up throughout the night to see the election results come through. I remember thinking how beautiful the whole family looked and immediately I fell in love with Michelle's dress. The whole outfit is something I would definitely wear. I was shocked when the next day the media probably beefed up by the haters were pouring scorn on Michelle's dress. I just could not see what the fuss was about and asked around over here in the UK. Some loved it, others thought it was okay but a fashion disaster - absolutely not.

Thanks for that article, Ari.

I believe everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when it was announced that Barack Obama was our 44th President. I was in the living room, on the couch, by myself and his picture came on the screen and they announced it. I was stunned and happy and emotional, all at the same time. My mom was in her bedroom watching it and I heard her screaming, Thank you, GOD. And we met in the hallway and hugged each other. The phone was ringing off the hook. When the whole family came out, it was just too beautiful for words.

One of my favorite moments of that night was when everyone was walking off the stage and the President stopped to wave and Mrs. O was ahead of him walking and she stopped turned around and waited for him. Then he walked to her, they embraced, gave each other a high five and walked off the stage. That was a very telling moment.

And I liked the dress as well. It wasn't my fave, but I didn't understand all the hoopla over it the next day.

Did everyone hear the Mrs. O and Dr. Jill will be at Game 1 of the World Series tomorrow?!? I wonder what her ensemble will be. Will she throw out the first pitch?

I had a full load of patients the next morning, so I was in bed when they called the race. I remember sitting up and watching intently when the family came on stage. And that was the first time I realized how historic the election actually was. So of course I started crying. I also remember thinking how beautiful and coordinated the family looked. I liked the dress too;-)

Oh I wept so hard with joy that night. I'd sent in my absentee vote and stayed away from the television and radio all day - I did not want to jinx things. I parked my car at home and took a long walk.
Then suddenly there were screams everywhere and this big burly guy all red in the face stopped in the street, coffee in one hand and mobile phone in the other and let out a loud hooray. I asked him what that was about and he said they'd called Virginia for Barack Obama and that he was now the projected winner.

I hugged this complete stranger and cried uncontrollably my heart was beating so hard and felt like it was going to explode. I then turned on my mobile phone and had a trillion messages and my phone wouldn't stop ringing. My family and friends in Jerusalem were calling and screaming with joy. It was amazing. I went home and turned on the t.v and couldn't stop crying. I thought the family looked just wonderful and appropriately subdued as they had just lost their Toot the night before.

I remember election night. I took two weeks off from work and donated that time to the campaign. I worked that day from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. taking people to the polls, knocking on doors, making calls to get out the vote. I remember when they called Ohio for Obama - I screamed, cried, laughed, jumped, sang...I was ecstatic and so relieved America had done the right thing. I'll never forget that night.

BTW:

"The White House announced today that First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will attend Game One of the 2009 World Series at Yankee Stadium in New York Wednesday night.

The game, which pits the 26-time World Series champion New York Yankees against the defending champs, the Philadelphia Phillies, will be dedicated to American veterans and their families. Before the game, the First Lady and Biden will join the New York Yankees at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx to visit with patients." Funny how many mention crying at the news of Obama's victory. I did, too. I cried for days when Kennedy was assassinated and while watching the Berlin wall come down in 1989 (I had studied there in the 1960s), but nothing in politics had made me cry for more than 20 years before that night last year.

Oh I didn't understand all that stupid hoopla about the election night dress either. I was talking to a friend (in Oregon) on messenger and we were bouncing about regarding how great it was that Obama had won, and then he said "shame about the terrible dress she wore" I was so shocked! Like "what are you TALKING about?" I thought she must have changed into something else later! Such a beautiful dress. Strong and feminine, contemporary and classic, bright but severe. I too feel it's one of the ones that, if I had the money, I would move heaven and earth to buy one.
