Smartly Dressed

Photo by Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

The first lady attended the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. today, where she posed the final round of questions to contestants. While there, Mrs. O announced that the White House would host a Science Fair for students from around the country. The New York Times has the full scoop, here.

Style wise, the first lady turned to a minimalist grey pant suit, paired with silver ballet flats and an oversize pin at the shoulder.

Update #1: Mrs. O's light grey silk/wool suit is a Narciso Rodriguez creation. No word quite yet on the absolutely splendid brooch.

Update #2: Mrs. O's brooch is an Erickson Beamon creation. Fabulous!

This is like what the villain in James Bond movie would wear! Come on! Very unflattering.

The shoes are fabulous, though.

there may be people out there who do not realize steve chu is chinese-american, or that chu is a chinese name, but i am sure that mrs. obama knows and thus wouldn't wear a kimono style jacket in his honor. treating japanese people and chinese people as the same "asian" group is not very respectful. it is a lovely suit and she wears it well. she knows how to be appropriate and fashion forward at the same time. she is a style icon in the making.

Mrs. Obama is radiant in that pantsuit; however, I think it's a bit odd saying that Mrs. Obama would be wearing an Asian style outfit as a nod to the U.S. Secretary of Energy and American science students, many of whom just happen to be Asian. I could see her wearing an Asian inspired outfit as a nod to the country she is visiting if she were going overseas to Asia, but to wear an Asian inspired outfit at an event that quite frankly has nothing to do with Asia beside the fact that the Secretary of Energy and many of the students are Asian is strange to me considering the fact that they are American. As an Asian-American myself, I would find it a bit uncomfortable and patronizing if someone did that to me at a non-Asian cultural related event. I really don't think Mrs. Obama chose her outfit based on the background of the attendees. I think she chose it because it's a lovely ensemble and she looks fantastic in it.
