Welcome Home

The Os returned home from their week long trip that included stops in Russia, Italy and Ghana. Exiting Airforce One, Mrs. O wears a floral print shirtdress by Moschino -- last seen when Joe Biden was announced as the vice presidential running mate last August.

Welcome home First Family. We love you!

I've always just loved this purple floral print dress on Mrs. O--it may be the 3rd time Mrs. O has worn it (I think I remember seeing her wear it in a WH background picture somewhere too). It still looks so fresh and I love it with her silver flats. I can tell it's a trusted staple in her wardrobe. I'm not a floral print person myself (prints seem to look too "busy" on my body), but everytime I see her wear it, I feel like experimenting with it more. Maybe the head to toe floral print isn't too "busy" on my body and it's all in my head....but it looks so much better on Mrs. O because of her height and long, great legs. On me, not a good look I think for my whole body, but I'll wear a floral print as a top or bottom separately for sure.

@kriskath re: "Whats Obama lokin at?"

Let's clear this up right now, he is being the perfect gentleman he is known to be. Click the link below that clearly shows that.

Yep, still have a big crush on the Obama family. They look great. Michelle is young enough in body and spirit to pull off the retro 50s-dress look with wit and aplomb. I'm always happy when they're out in the world and happy when they're home and safe.

Mrs. T, you state it perfectly...Welcome home Os! They must be exhausted. I would need a 'no maintenance day' in my pjs'.

I really like her in these dresses. The color is marvelous on her.

I think she handled the entire trip with great style, grace and dignity.

All I'm sayin' is they're a better family than we are. If my family and I were getting off that airplane, I'd be in yoga pants, a tank top and flip flops, my beloved would be in cargo shorts, a t-shirt and crocs and the kidlets would be in their jamamas!.

Mrs. O, thanks for being a starch-free zone! YOU are always lovely, even when the belt is too high, the tunic too busy, the bow too big, the photo angle not the best. It is SO much about your
spirit, your smile, your confidence, your approachability. You do us proud.

@ mrso2 - LOL. So true. But they are always on, so it's part of the gig.

I love, love, love this dress on Mrs. O. Always have. If I could find something similar and affordable, I'd snatch it up. The fit is perfect, the color and pattern complements her skin, and the overall look seems so easy, yet refined. One of my faves.

I have to say that I am so proud and happy when they travel because Mr. O usually does so well and accomplishes his goals, and Mrs. O always looks and presents herself and our country so well too. But I can't lie, we miss them when they're gone. Things aren't the same when Mr. O isn't around focusing the country on working together and productively, and when Mrs. O isn't spreading her positivity around doing various things around D.C. and at the White House.

Wow, how tall is Malia?! I hope everyone remembers her real age and doesn't pile unrealistic expectations on her just because she looks older.

I love that even though the Obamas could easily have chosen to keep their daughters completely out of sight they allow us to see their family going through their daily life together. What a great gift to give the world.

the blog called the Black Snob has some really great pictures of Mrs. O in Italy that I hadn't seen anywhere.

You can really see the black outfit she wore when she took the girls on a tour in Rome. I think the anti-leggings folks will be taking back their criticism when they see the whole look. Very stylish and "in" with the leggings, the black top, and her sandals. It's a cool look.

http://blacksnob.squarespace.com/snob_blog/2009/7/11/obamas-overseas-part-i-pictures.html

Also notice the shots of her at the first ladies' dinner in the yellow dress. Very nice as well.

I'm so happy to have the Obamas back home. Don't we feel a little like orphans without them here, but so proud of the way they represent us to the world? IVA, you said it so well.

I'm sorry to be the one to say that this has never been one of my favorite dresses. I think the color is good, but I don't care for the style or the way it fits her. But it's good to see them all looking relaxed as they arrive back home.

IVA - thanks for the link to Blacksnob. Great pictures I haven't seen elsewhere. Those were the best photos of Mrs. O with the leggings outfit, and it looked very chic. Loved the top, the leggings, the sandals and the bangles, and with the hair pulled up, it is perfect.

The purple flower dress might be one of my favs. It looks so comfy and attractive on her.

Personally, I can live without BlackSnob. She has a bad habit of using other people's images without crediting them and/or getting permission, and for quite a while was posting AP photos on her Flickr page and claiming copyright.

Lovely pictures on BlackSnob. Don't the bodyguards look so incredibly INTENSE? Dressed casually in some of the photos (like the ones with Mrs. O in the black leggings outfit, which looks totally terrific, by the way) but always so alert and intent. It's like pent up energy ready to pop right out of the computer screen! And that Malia! Very cool and self-possessed--it will be quite interesting to see her grow up. I love the girls' clothes on this trip--very appropriate for the occasions and for their ages, and comfortable-looking too. I hope the whole family gets a chance to rest now!

Mrs. O. looks great in this dress, and looks especially good for having just spent the last week in a whirlwind. I liked her fashions this week much better on the whole than the outfits she wore to Europe earlier. There were some beautiful ones in that bunch too, though. I am so happy to see that in the last two days, Mrs. O. has been wearing the "self" belts/sashes that come with her dresses...sure hope she keeps that up!

Mrs. O looks fabulous in that dress. Moschino should send her some free clothes because she makes that dress look worth every penny!

BTW - there are some pix at Black Snob that really show off the details of that black dress/leggings/sandals look. Super fabulous!

It's funny - but I hated this dress when she wore it for the first time at the Biden announcement. I was like, "Print? Shirtwaist??" But I LOVE it now. I completely get it. And it's such a perfect MO look. Amazing how much difference a few months can make.

Love it. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like a wrapdress, tied at the hip? If it is it's quite flattering on her, and I like how the collar is up just so. Comfortable, but still pulled together. I think she should wear more dresses like this.

This, and the white dress in Ghana, both define her waist beautifully without looking constricting. The belt placements are where they're most flattering (as part of the garment).

Mrs. O's dress is very reminiscent of a Michael Kors print. The big purple flowers look very similar. Love it. And can we talk about how fashionable and fabulous Malia is. Her style is evolving rapidly. Obviously takes after her mom!

Wow. I don't remember seeing that dress before, but seeing it here I really like it. Love the colors, the print and the cut.

With the kids and parents paired up in this way, it's remarkable to see the resemblance between Sasha and Mrs. O and between Malia and Mr. O.

Monday, July 13, 2009 at 2:40 PM | Registered CommenterMsG

Purples, magentas, roses - they are such flattering colors on Mrs. O. I love the wrap waist on her as well - very clean look and lovely on her figure.

I love to see this family together. They do us proud.

Monday, July 13, 2009 at 4:20 PM | Registered CommenterBevi

Yes, Ms G, the pairings do point up how Malia looks like the President and Sasha like Flotus. And this photo brings up so many memories of traveling with my parents. Their closeness is evident.

As for the anti-leggings brigade, Vogue this month declared that leggings are back and has an entire fashion spread on them. I love leggings, because dresses seem so short this summer. But with leggings, you can wear some of them as tunics.

"I love leggings, because dresses seem so short this summer. But with leggings, you can wear some of them as tunics." Will someone PLEASE relay that information to my two teenage daughters?!!!

Here's a closer look at that unique necklace Mrs. O wore in Russia. It's really intricate and dressed up a simple outfit without overpowering it.

Goodness yes. I can't imagine the fashion scene without leggings in it. They are so integral. And a fabulous idea for younger girls who want to be rushing out and about. Less constricting than jeans, avoids the odd accident in public! And for slim fit women, they just look extraordinary. Michelle looked really good in Italy in hers - so smart, and so cool.

Did anyone else read the Robin Givhan article in the Washington post about this dress? A fair bit of inaccurate, or non information, and the ridiculous suggestion that now Mrs Obama is repeating clothes, the world needs a new fashion icon. Does she get paid to write this drivel?! I can do better than that!!!!

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 8:17 AM | Unregistered CommenterPosh Tater

Leggings were a huge factor in mid-80's outfits. And their cousins - stretch pants with stirrups - were huge in the 60's.

Plus ca change, plus la meme chose....

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 10:30 AM | Registered CommenterBevi

Hey POSH T,

I read the Robin Givhan article last night and was a little confused. Her tone is complicated.
Is that just her journalistic style? I can't tell if she admires MO or not. I think you can be a fashion icon while repeating clothes. Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana certainly did. I'm glad you brought this up...I thought it was just me!!

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 11:56 AM | Registered Commenterann#1

As to Robin Givhan, I think the thing about not repeating clothes goes back to when people took baths, like, once a year. I can't imagine any sensible person basically throwing money into the trash by only wearing things once.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 12:36 PM | Registered CommenterKaren Anne

The Obama family are such a fantastic role model for American families.

I would like to see the First Lady vary up here style a little more for her casual day time wear.
Over all, I love her style.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 3:37 PM | Unregistered CommenterAndrea

I read the article by Robin Givhan too and was left with a question. Does repeating clothes make one a fashion/style icon no longer? First, I must say that when I was introduced to Ms. Givhan via CNN, she seemed to needle the First Lady. She suggested back then that Michelle would one day let us down. Strike one. Michelle has repeated outfits on this last jaunt through several nations and now Robin thinks we need a replacement for "center stage." Call me crazy, but I don't get the logic. Fellow posters, help me understand.

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at 7:44 PM | Registered CommenterMcKinley

The only people Michelle is letting down are those who jump on bandwagons and refuse to think for themselves. The media seem so intent on first knocking Michelle down with the angry black woman slur, when people disregarded their assessment the media then hops on the bandwagon and builds Michelle up....now they are trying to tear down what they feel they built up. There is a certain arrogance in the American press. Since Michelle is so popular they must pick their battles carefully.

Even the "european royalty" - princesses and queens - have repeated clothes, shoes, handbags and they miix and match all the time. Just take a look at some of the european "royalty" blogs. There should be no problem with repeating clothes!

She looks fabulous as always. I am finally able to say I am proud to have my President and his family represent me as an American!!! They are a wonderful example of what a family should be.

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 7:11 PM | Unregistered CommenterLinda Bruder

McKinley I believe this is a classic example of what I have referred to many times here on the blog.

Namely, the article that gets written when a journalist has nothing better to do than to find a non-existent bit of "proof" that something is "real" or "true" and writes an essay on it. Thus conferring the status of "information" on an at best lame theory, dreamed up over a bad bagel during a rushed lunch hour.

If they are lucky, the article actually gains credence and they have started a rumour or a line of thinking that becomes (via gossip) a part of the "and I read that she did THIS!" rumourmill that surrounds our public figures.

Of course, the possibility that Michell put that dress on because it's a favourite, a nice colour, maybe Barack likes it, and it's comfortable for wearing on a plane, never gets an article written about it.

Yawn.

Journo's need to earn their paycheque. Even if it means writing crap.
